Dozens of prominent evangelical leaders recently held a prayer vigil in protest of various cutbacks to US foreign aid made by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE.
The faith leaders argue that the recent budget cuts harm vulnerable groups across the planet – and are not in the true spirit of Christ.
The “Prayer Vigil for Foreign Aid” was organized by the Christian-based advocacy group Bread for the World. Participants gathered at Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, March 11 in protest and prayer.
During the vigil, the faith groups highlighted the human cost of the humanitarian cuts, arguing that the Bible offers “very clear guidance” on providing for the poor and needy.
"A Moral Failure"
“We are here today to urge the administration and Congress, Democrats and Republicans alike, to do all that they can,” said Rev. Eugene Cho, CEO of Bread for the World. “It’s not too late to protect critical international aid that supports tens of millions of people suffering alone right now.”
The vigil came just one day after Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced 83% of USAID programs, which provide foreign aid and assistance to other countries, would be shuttered.
Decrying the “broad, un-targeted cuts,” Rev. Cho said that “These indiscriminate cuts are not just a policy failure… For us, especially, as followers of Christ, as uncomfortable as it may be, we must clearly… but prophetically, say: it is also a moral failure.”
The group's managing director, Rev. Heather Taylor, offered a similar plea:
Reversing the cuts will still be an uphill fight. “I don’t think there’s any going back to the USAID we once knew,” Taylor acknowledged. “God is a miracle worker, but the writing is on the wall.”
A Biblical Mandate
Faith leaders say that the protest is motivated by their love of Christ.
The Bible offers “very clear guidance” said vigil speaker Kombo Choga of Compassion International. Quoting Proverbs 19:17, he stated at the vigil, “whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord.”
Another speaker at the vigil, Lanre Williams-Ayedun of World Relief, echoed those sentiments. When our political leaders “neglect the vulnerable” they are “turning away from God.”
The message of the vigil was clear: cuts to USAID are not only wrong, they are unbiblical because of the harm caused to vulnerable communities abroad. And though nearly all speakers conceded that the program has its faults, they say that cutting funding with a hammer instead of a chisel is not the answer.
Since 2001, foreign aid has hovered around 1% of the entire United States budget. They ask: when it comes to tightening the fiscal belt, is this the place to start?
A Higher Power At Work?
DOGE continues to have strong support from other factions of believers, however. Politicians have gone to bat for the controversial government department and its funding cuts, assuring those affected by DOGE that "God has a plan" for them. Others have praised the Tesla founder directly, saying "thank God for Elon Musk."

Gas in my state is $0.30 cheaper per gallon which amounts to a whopping $3.00 savings at the pump when I fill up.

If I could afford to own a home, I'd love to welcome all people of my community and provide care for them. I have a healthy distrust of legacy media as well, but instead of believing that all they do is lie, I compare what all of them are saying in order to inform my opinion. If you can prove to me or show me evidence that these outlets are lying and fooling me, I'd love to see it so I can better inform myself.

Gasoline prices are finally coming down, eggs are now cheaper, as are some other commodities. Many criminal illegals are being removed. I love the idea of an External Revenue Service and dismantling the IRS. I hope that happens. We will all be richer if that comes into effect, but the left will find something to complain about because that's the way they are. 🤷🏼

Lionhart - AND, the tarrifs are going to offset every gain. I take it you haven't been to the grocery store in the past week or so, because the cost of my cart has only been going up. If eggs are going down by .20 or .30 per dozen (which I don't see here), the cost of imported produce is doubling, So are the costs of packaged goods. Soda that I used to by for $10.00 for three 12-packs of 12 oz. cans now I can get on sale for $10.00 for two 10-packs of 7oz (mini) cans. So I have switched to a reusable water bottle. This does little to help the US workers in the factories that produce the soda and cans.

Please do your research to see how other countries tax/tariff our goods that are sold in their countries while we add little or no additional costs to their products sold here making those countries rich through what we pay for their products. Balancing the playing field will give those countries a taste of their own doing that eventually will benefit all of US. BUT, they raise the price of the goods they sell to other countries by the same percentage to offset the cost of the tarrifs. What you state is like saying the cost of cigarrettes don't go up because of the state taxes, because the store owners pay that tax or that the gasoline taxes don't affect the price at the pump. The consumer is the one that always gets shafted in the end.

They're not going to just cut themselves a check. They're giving government contracts to their companies (SpaceX and Tesla) or using their properties for government business which results in the government, or other governments, paying Trump.
Cutting funding to NPR wouldn't do that much for the budget but it would make Americans less informed, something the GOP seems to love these days. It's a blatant lie that NPR normally has 23 radio towers per city since they don't own any towers at all; it distributes programming to member stations that own and operate their own towers.

You just can't go deeper and deeper into debt. How long will your church exist? You have to make cuts but first you have to make salaries, mortgage and utility payments. You cannot live beyond your means. Making cuts is hard. If cuts have to be made, you can't be nice. It is painful. So, you're all for someone who knows absolutely nothing about how a federal system works to come in and in less than a month thinks he knows exactly where all the cuts need to go in the largest federal system in the world? Even the most brilliant business mind wouldn't do that. A government system cannot be evaluated and managed like a for-profit business, because it is not one. It is there in service to its people and in some cases its allies, when national security is at stake. I'm not saying there isn't grift or things spent haphazzardly, but I have been involved in evaluation of grant processes, and what needs to be done can't be done in less than a month without complete chaos, which is what they created. Now Musk is running scared because people are wanting to know how decisions were made through the Freedom of Information Act, and it is doubtful that there is enough documentation to sustain tens of thousands of people laid off and the revocation of billions of dollars of grants. That would take a team of a thousand evaluators a couple of years to complete, and his team isn't anywhere near that big, nor have they had enough time. Everything they are doing are being rolled back by court order, so if that doesn't signal how unconstitutional this process has been, I'm not sure what does.

Having worked for a bureaucracy for decades and ridden herd on work groups, I see the necessity of checks and counterchecks to be as sure as possible that things are done correctly the first time. Before you cut out the people's jobs you have to go through and see what is actually necessary and what isn't. Jesus did not say loving one another was conditional upon being able to preach to them, those were separate edicts. A good heart keeps helping the ways they can, and slowly works on the rest. The government stopped nothing, churches made their choice.

I see many good and thoughtful comments here. I don't have much to add, and perhaps with the plethora of comments already submitted someone has made this point and I missed it.
It seems to me that to frame the question as whether or not we support foreign aid is misleading. If we assume that foreign aid is a beneficial use of our money, which I do, then the question needs to be whether we are providing it responsibly, and in a manner that can be tracked for accountability. The current set up is not only causing billions to go unaccounted for, but it is also allowing people to provide "aid" to enterprises that we have no business funding. The individuals in the foreign countries that want to fund their questionable artistic pursuits, or scientific studies should be receiving their money from their government or private investors. This is a waste of tax payers dollars.
So, does Jesus advocate for care for the poor and oppressed? absolutely. Does the Bible from cover to cover advocate for the responsible use of money? Absolutely. Can many of the items masquerading as foreign aid be subsidized by private parties or local governments? Totally We need to ask the right questions before we can provide the correct answers.

I find it extremely disheartening the amount of people who hide behind the mask of "Christianity" while supporting the policies most contrary to the teaching of both Jesus and the Bible. Whereas the Old Testament provided for a means for the poor to glean crops from their more successful neighbors in order to be sustained, today these people decry Social Security, which we pay into, affordable health care and public assistance, even critiquing parents who occasionally treat their children to ice cream and other snacks. They fear immigrants in a land that they emigrated to and appropriated from the original inhabitants, even as the Bible admonishes to treat the immigrants in the land as neighbors.
They claim piety and a respect for the law while electing a man who encouraged an insurrection which seriously injured police officers, pardoned the violent criminals who participated, and actually praised their actions. The man, a serial adulterer, who was twice impeached, and who has been convicted of 34 felonies, who by law should not even be able to own bullets, yet has authority over the entire military, and who, instead of realizing he is the President of the entire United States, has decided to enact vengeance against any with opposing views, is the antithesis of all that Jesus taught.
But these "Christians" will make all sorts of excuses for supporting a man whose entire history stands in stark contrast to the message of redemption, and love taught by Jesus. This is why Jesus said that when judgment comes he said to 'start in my house'.

Everyone needs to face reality. We have a debt of 36-37 TRILLION dollars. It is growing at the rate of ~two trillion per year. That largest budget item is now paying the interest on the debt. This is larger than welfare (Medicaid, Medicare & Social Security), or defense spending. Payment on interstate does not build a single road, fund education, healthcare, buy a tank, or build a national park. It is just a heavy burden on our economy and quality of life. Cutting defense is probably suicidal in today’s world. Welfare is a sacred cow but it MUST be reduced. Congress has shirked it responsibility for decades by “kicking the can down the road”. Praise God and God Bless All..... With being a clergy as my first calling and being a humanitarian and development professional for more than two decades including having worked with USAID as my second calling; my take on this is:
There are two aspects to it as we all know..... 1. From the Biblical point of view, President Trump' order was extremely important to break the nexus of the New World Order and the Illuminati, that was indirectly and in many ways controlling the the resources flow to non biblical "projects" worldwide including mainstreaming LGBTIQ+ under the garb of Gender..... when Bible clearly recognizes only two - male and female. These are end times and one needs to be extremely cautious and careful; and we need to be conform to Biblical norms. So, this was essential 2. From the humanitarian development nexus point of view, this order by President Trump has inadvertently affected a lot of critical and basic life support and care programs especially in poor, war ravaged and humanitarian crisis countries; we need to have a back up plan to support the community living, literally and figuratively on the edge of life. Also, the way the long standing USAID professionals were ousted was / is not correct. They deserved a respectable exit and a back up employment support plan. I am confident that Jesus will make a way where there seems to be no way.
Let's keep the entire world in our prayers may Jesus' Grace and Mercy prevails in the lives of people inspite of some of these tough albeit necessary steps/ corrections/ reforms.....

Trump is hurting people EVERYWHERE. While cutting inefficiency could be helpful, doing it in a haphazard, chaotic way can only cause more problems. And these are actually people losing jobs that they loved and valued.
The deportations are far reaching and people that are legally citizens are being impacted and put through hell. Families are being torn apart. Hard working individuals that have been peacefully living in this country and providing necessary work to American businesses are being taken instead of helping them with a path towards citizenship.
Stopping 83% of US Aid will have far reaching consequences including increase in diseases and death, as well as adverse effects on our farmers.
The decrease in social services like Medicaid and Social Security will affect all of us. Trump wants you to believe that everyone on Medicaid is trying to milk the system, but most have full time jobs. The employers in this country don't pay a living wage so Medicaid helps these people survive. And if you don't think he's touching Social Security, wake up. Just by virtue of initially cutting out staff and locations, it's touched with more to come.
And Trump has alienated us from the entire world except for Russia. Does that not speak volumes?!
The goal is Project 2025. They are ahead of schedule with it. The ultra-rich are getting more wealth than anyone could ever need, while the rest of working Americans are doing increasingly worse. It is blatantly clear that taxes must be increased on those wealthy few; this is one of the most obvious ways of combatting the deficit.
What's obvious is that those that are comfortable with what's going on are not well informed (since Fox and Newsmax will never report accurately and Trump is nothing but a liar) or they are simply CINO. If Jesus walked the earth today, I think we all know in our hearts which side he'd be on.

Not government. God will but it in your own heart what he calls you to do. If he’s calling you to give by all means give. I personally have experienced where life was good for me and God was trying to to get my attention, but I couldn’t hear him because I didn’t feel I needed to turn to him. It wasn’t until I was down on my knees asking for him to come into my life that he lifted me off my knees… How can we be so sure that isn’t the case here? If you heard from him to say help those, then he is calling you. You will be judge on your actions. It has to come from you. You already gave to Caesars what is his? He’s calling on you to go above and beyond that. I have a question for all those churches that are praying, and that’s a great thing, we all should be praying for those in need. But what have those churches and people done personally to help those other countries. To me that’s like telling the person who has a twig in their eyes when you have a log in yours.. Giving someone else’s money away in my opinion isn’t going to to cut it when the book of life opens up on me.

There are better areas to focus on than cutting off education, the elderly and others. It’s good to do research, but propaganda is EVERYWHERE. I recommend checking multiple sources before just believing what you read. As for everything related to Trump’s presidency, contrary to what he says, prices are going up and housing is impossible to afford. We have to look to history to avoid making the same mistakes.

X is no different; since Elon took the platform over, it's been overrun by actual Nazis and white supremacists and the quality of the information received from X has drastically dropped as more and more people leave it. This has created a far-right echo chamber on X where posts and claims are rarely challenged or scrutinized leading to the massive spread of misinformation. MAGA folks have fallen head first into this con being perpetrated by people looking to amass power and wealth at the expense of the American people.

Thank you for telling me to not believe “nothing” and only half of what I see. That, in part, is why I have secular views about religion and God. I am currently not convinced there is a god, due to lack of demonstrable evidence. People telling me what to believe has nothing to do worth logic, reason, or critical thought. What we “can” rely on are evidence based studies that can be put into question, and verify the evidence. I am not in a position to verify Government’s claims, but bi-partisan committees can. So far, no one in government has disproved those claims by DOGE with any factual evidence to disprove them. Let’s see if anyone can disprove them over the next 4 years, and not just the average layman saying lies, lies, lies, with no supporting evidence. The animus for President Trump and Elon Musk is huge by Democrats, and it could be their downfall at the next election.

Anyone can say they are lies, just like people can say God is real, but one has to provide evidence to support those claims to be correct in their statements. Until then, the governments claims saying they have the evidence to support those claims has to stand until any bipartisan oversight committee can prove they are false, much like when Adam Schiff claimed there was a Russia collusion only to be proved he lied when his claims were investigated. That’s how government works, Sir Keith. So, where is your evidence to support your claim they are lies? If you don’t currently have any evidence, other than a possible “feeling” because of a disdain for the current administration, your claim actually means nothing.

We all hope you are correct, Ari. Let's hope that DOGE's investigations support your claim. What we do know is that Social Security began August 14th, 1935. That's 90 years ago, which kinda blows a hole in anyone's claim saying "Those lists were everyone that's ever had a SS number since it began" if those dates are correct on the list that goes back 159 years...and some more than 250+ years. What are your thoughts on that?
It's very wonderful that all this effort is underway to ensure our hard earned tax dollars are being well spent, isn't it? That question was answered a while back in a different article. Back in 1930, there were no computers and SS applications/forms were on paper (likely in triplicate if you're old enough to remember those). At some point all those hand-written forms were typed (likely onto punch cards) and entered into a big iron mainframe computer (yes, I'm old enough to have learned how to program on one of those monsters), When the paper form wasn't readable it was likely either left blank or some default date was put in, or the "keypunch operator" miskeyed the birthdate. The programming language often didn't know what to do with these, so they likely defaulted to a date. This was from people who worked for Soc Security during the computerization of the records. By the way, it wasn't until the 1970s or 80s that children were given Social Security numbers at birth. I didn't get mine until I was almost 20 and needed to get one to get my first job (while I was still in college). So some people who started paying into Social Security in their 40s or 50s could still have Social Security numbers in the database and would be 130+ years old. All death certificates are now, by law, Social Security is automatically notified, and if the person had already got paid the month they died, the estate is required to pay it back. I hope that the Musk briggade has enough people to thourally vet all those millions of centagenarians that "appear" to be receiving benefits and will be forthcoming with their full findings of how many checks are going to coffins, and how many were simply data entry errors back in the 1960s.

Those were people with Socials that weren't marked as deceased. It did not mean they were receiving benefits. If they were, the person who was impersonating them should go to jail, as they are being paid. How many arrests have been made for this?

You might indeed be correct, Lady Patricia, and let's hope none of them were getting paid. That information has so far not been established and I am sure is underway. It's very early days with all that DOGE is doing, so I hope the investigations are going to be thorough.
However, those that we currently know "were" getting paid were in the list in my first post from USAID. Anyone that doesn't agree with that list can also say they are lies, as long as they have demonstrable evidence to support that claim.

It would take hours of my time to explain how basically everything you've listed is either incorrect or misrepresented but this is the classic conservative technique of flooding the zone with poop. There's so many inaccurate claims made that you don't have enough time to debunk them all before the focus moves on to the next conservative target.
Unfortunately for all of us, Trump's tariffs and trade war is going to send prices up for everybody in almost every market. Your taxes aren't going to go down unless you're super rich while the rest of the country will be taking on a larger burden of the tax budget.

LH, yes, and we've seen how accurate the information on the DOGE website is. The numbers have been bouncing up and down like pingpong balls dropped from a 10th story balcony. They don't have a clue what they've uncovered or whether it is "waste" or not. They just have their machetes out and are slashing, not caring who gets hurt in the process. All of the "probationaries" that were worthless are getting to return to work now because the way they did it was far from legal. So, if this makes you proud of what has been done, I really can't say much more. You are as despicable as they are.

All these investigations over the next 3 or 4 years will determine how accurate their findings are. Isn't it wonderful that we have an administration that is looking into possible Government waste, much like President Clinton, and President Obama did during their terms of office.
It was originally estimated Pres Clinton layed off 377,000, but in fact According to testimony from Elaine Karmarck, the director of Clinton's initiative, it eliminated 426,200 federal roles between January 1993 and September 2000. I wonder if President Trump's effort to create government efficiency will reach those figures?
According to ABC news: "Since Obama took office, 636,000 state and local jobs have been cut. In 2011 alone, 113,000 jobs were cut in local schools, 68,000 jobs were cut in local government administration, and 78,000 jobs were cut in state government administration, according to a Commerce Department report."
I'm curious to know if you were okay with those layoffs from President Clinton, and President Obama that possibly totaled over 1 million jobs? Or was it okay being as they were from the Democrat party?

Let's see. Obama didn't hold the purse strings. Neither did Clinton. The constitution states that it is the legislative branch that controls spending, and if I'm not mistaken both Obama and Clinton's legislative branch was a Republican majority for most of their terms. Trump only thinks he has control of the distribution of funding, and the courts are slapping his hands for it. Those layoffs were spending cuts that happened because of special interest groups insisting they get their cut of the funds (mostly defense), so something else had to go. Clinton and Obama both had a lower deficit than either Bush or Trump (first term).

The last year I worked prior to retirement, I paid more taxes with my standard deduction (because I didn't make enough to invest in any tax shelters) than a friend of mine that made over $450,000. I made less than $100,000. This tax gap is going to get worse, as big tax breaks for "investments" (only possible for the extremely wealthy) are going to be what is proposed. Like the $5M Gold cards for immigrants that will require an investment in a US business venture (probably with a nice tax break as well). I'm not sure I see any line forming for that "big deal" yet. The incentives for the (primarily white) South Africans has been mostly laughed at by those that could take advantage of it.

He called Mexicans coming into our country murders, rapists, and drug dealers despite statistics showing that immigrants, regardless of legal status, commit less crimes than natural born citizens. Even back in the 1970s he was under investigation for racial discrimination when he refused to rent to Black tenants. If you say racist things and do racist things, you're probably a racist.

It is easy to justify withholding help from others when we are caught in the grip of fear, scarcity, or self-preservation. But love is not a transaction; it is a way of being.
The Root of the Issue: A Failure to See the Humanity in Others
At the heart of this issue lies a failure to see and understand the humanity of those we claim we cannot afford to help. These cuts are not just budgetary adjustments—they are a denial of the inherent dignity of human beings who are suffering. If you are quoting biblical figures other than Jesus, you are not truly following His teachings. Jesus came to free us from religious hypocrisy. If you consider yourself a follower yet align with the Pharisees—religious hypocrites who crucified Jesus simply because He taught us to forget about religion and the law, and to treat and love others as we wish to be treated—then you are missing the essence of His message. Loving others is not a duty or something you must do to earn rewards in the afterlife. The kingdom of joy that comes from sharing abundance with others is heaven here and now.
Of course, this does not mean we should give in ways that cause harm to others. We must question our foreign aid policies. Is the money truly being given to improve the quality of life for people, or is it merely an exchange to support our greed and materialistic values? We have to examine why our leaders, who have not done enough to share the wealth within our own country to uplift its people, use foreign aid to make us think we are helping others unconditionally. If we are giving from a place of love, then that abundance should overflow at home before it spills over borders, ensuring that love is felt everywhere.

In my opinion, I feel that it is not a matter of right or wrong as much as it is about accountability. Where is the documentation for the funding distribution? How much of the funding actually makes it to it's designated destination? Who is actually benefitting from it? I know that this may rattle some cages but the name US AID implies United States. I personally feel that money could be saved by keeping it here in this country and not spread around the globe. Let other countries support their own. Yes, the US should provide aid to peoples and countries in need. But, often the aid has strings attached. The US is requiring countries and groups of people to adopt gender ideology. In some cases, grantees returned the money, refusing to compromise their values. The US government never gives without getting something in return. My faith is in giving! There are so many in need here in the US that have been looked over and are homeless because we give to foreign aid before taking care of those in need here. How are we responsible for how other countries are governed when we cant govern our own through christ? Charity begins st home with the flock that needs and depends on us here? Teach our children to go out and and spread his word and the rest eill follow. Christ needs to be brought back this country so we can help others in need

When we're paying for Ukraine to fight a war that we should probably join against them in that's a hell no. I believe in giving, however, why would you give to people who eventually will bite the hand that feeds it? Why give to countries that openly and flagrantly use the funds to promote violence against fellow human beings, use funds and then go narcissistic on the hand feeds it, use the funds to promote sin and to use the funds to get gender change operations. This is insane, we are 36T in debt....and you want to "pray" against DOGE? What happens in your own households when you have more debt than income? Do you spend more money or do you cut back on expenditures? Praying against being fiscally responsible and expect your God to bless you with agreement is egocentric and not aligned with what is truth and responsible.

Sigh! I worked with economists for over 40 years. Reading a history of taxation in the US might shed some light on how governments acquire funds since that is the main way that they make money. (I'd like to add that government doesn't work like a business; it's essentially closer to being a nonprofit.) Check Wikipedia, e.g., for more information. If one has more debt than income, one can always raise more income (i.e., tax money) by increasing tax rates. Of course that could result in a revolution, as it was a major impetus for our Revolution.
DOGE says its purpose is to rid us of waste, fraud and abuse, but that's a cover story and feeds into citizens' mistrust of government. The current administration wants to give the ultra-wealthy further tax reductions. Over the past few decades, tax rates for the morbidly rich have been reduced a number of times from a former high of ~90% at the end of WWII to around 35% these days. For example, I recall Kennedy reducing rates from 90% to 70%.
And just as frosting on the cake, you might be aware that tax rates on capital gains and dividends are lower than rates on earned income, so wealthy families are getting tax breaks on their investments, unlike the general population who earn their main income through labor.
DOGE has set its sights on slashing Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid (the first two programs into which those of us with earned income have been contributing regularly for decades), which account for a very large portion of governmental payouts. Another large payout is for defense, but I don't hear anything about reducing Pentagon and military spending--except for reducing veterans' benefits.
I could go on in much greater detail on this subject but I'm not here to write a book, or even a chapter. So much of the fuss over money is antithetical to humanitarian ideals, including those of Christianity and other religions. It's very easy to understand why Jesus became so angry at the moneylenders at the temple and why the widow's mite is held up as an example for the rest of us.

Our taxes on the wealthiest Americans are too low. Because of loopholes and deductions, they're often paying a smaller percentage of their income in taxes than some of the poorest Americans. That means less money for schools, roads, parks, and all of the public spaces we all use.
