Anti-Muslim messages on wall
Trump's criticism of Islam has struck a chord with many Americans who believe that Islam poses a grave threat to the Western world.

Is President Trump partly responsible for recent spikes in anti-Muslim hate crimes?

In their paper _Making America Hate Again? Twitter and Hate Crime Under Trump_, a team of researchers from the University of Warwick discovered a link between President Trump's tweets on Islam and a corresponding rise in anti-Muslim hate crimes.

The researchers came to this alarming conclusion after studying FBI hate crime statistics and comparing them to Trump's Twitter history.

Their findings revealed a stark rise in anti-Muslim hate crimes that began during Trump's presidential campaign. These hate crimes were also concentrated in counties with high Twitter usage - boosting the chances that attackers had been inspired by Twitter messages. Then there's this: researchers found a direct correlation between the number of Trump tweets criticizing Muslims in a given week and the number of anti-Muslim hate crimes reported in that time span.

"I think it all comes together to create this kind of environment where targeting Muslims is acceptable or has become acceptable," said Madihha Ahussain, of the Muslim-rights group Muslim Advocates.

What Researchers Looked At

Researchers studied the 26 year period for which the FBI has published data surrounding hate crimes against Muslim-Americans. What became immediately clear is that Trump's time in office is a historical outlier in terms of the average number of reported hate crimes - eclipsing even the spike in anti-Muslim attacks prevalent in the post-9/11 era.

While the researchers were careful to elaborate that they don't believe Trump directly encourages supporters to carry out violence against Muslim citizens, they also don't rule out the possibility that Trump's eagerness to criticize Muslims has led to a rise in Islamophobia and hate crimes. Nor has this trend been limited to U.S. soil, as the recent "Punish a Muslim Day" incident in the U.K. goes to show.

Tweets on the Record

Perhaps the most striking Twitter example cited by critics were a series of fake videos retweeted by Trump that claimed to show violent acts being carried out by Muslims in Europe. After a strong backlash, Trump later apologized for retweeting the videos.

In another tweet, sent last summer, Trump seemingly endorsed the tactics many attribute to a U.S. general who served in the Philippines. He reportedly used pig's blood as a way to threaten Muslim prisoners into submission - pigs are considered unholy in Islam and coming into contact with their blood amounts to a holy desecration of the body.

Then there were the numerous tweets Trump sent regarding his travel ban (criticized by some as a de facto Muslim ban) which elicited strong reactions from both sides.

Researchers examined the impact of these tweets - along with many others - and came to the conclusion that Trump's messages could be having a notable effect on hate crime rates.

Security Concerns: Real or Fake?

Although this evidence is largely circumstantial, on the whole it paints a disturbing picture. Like it or not, Trump's criticism of Islam has struck a chord with many Americans who believe that Islam poses a grave threat to the Western world. With Islamic terror attacks continuing to occur, many are convinced that ensuring national security will require taking a hard line on issues like immigration. But others argue these fears are largely fabricated, and point out that fearmongering will only make the situation worse.

What do you think? Is President Trump to blame for the rise in anti-Muslim sentiments, or are there other forces at play?

Save humanitarian kindness. The politics of America at the moment, and throughout history, have proven war-mongering money interests with resources of another country and/or money that can be made during war efforts. It's all abuse and greed. islam is peaceful. Christianity is peaceful. The extremism in these ideologies is what is the discord. Throw money behind it and the message can be stamped on the vulnerable populations minds as actionable movements that harm targeted people. Dangerous.

Islam is not peaceful. Christianity: Come to Christ of your own free will. Love your enemies. Islam: Convert or die. Kill you enemies.

Islam cannot and will never assimilate with our Constitutional / Judaeo-Christian foundations. We must keep them in our prayers that they repent from following a false man-made god and come to Christ----of their own free will.

Veronica - How do I put this politely? You are wrong with just about everything you seem to believe about Islam as well as Christianity.

First, the US and its Constitution are not based on a Judeo-Christian concept, but a secularist one.

Second, to claim that Islam has a "false man-made god", I would question your claims, given that Islam is one of the three major Abrahamic faiths, on par with Judaism and Christianity. All three worship the same God of Abraham.

Third, to claim that Christianity is peaceful, let me share what the bible says about loving anyone who decides to leave Christianity:

Let us look at Deuteronomy 13:6-9 "If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you love, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying: Let us go and worship other gods (gods that neither you nor your fathers have known, gods of the peoples around you, whether near or far, from one end of the land to the other, or gods of other religions), do not yield to him or listen to him. Show him no pity. Do not spare him or shield him. You must certainly put him to death. Your hand must be the first in putting him to death, and then the hands of all the people."

Also let us look at Deuteronomy 17:3-5 "And he should go and worship other gods and bow down to them or to the sun or the moon or all the army of the heavens, .....and you must stone such one with stones and such one must die."

About Islam saying to kill one's enemies:

Prohibition of Despoiling Abū Bakr aš-Šiddīq commanded the leader of the first Islamic military expedition after the Prophet saying: ...No fruit-bearing trees are to be cut down and no crops should be set on fire. No animal should be killed except those slaughtered for eating...Only those should be killed who take up arms against you.

Suicide Attacks One of Islam’s fundamental principles is the sanctity of life. Islam prohibits killing those who are not combatants, except those involved in a direct battle face-to-face between warriors. There is simply no room for maneuver in Islam to justify the killing of innocents, even as a form of mass retribution, which many radicals today use as justification for their large-scale attacks on civilians. For Islam prohibits blood feud and specifies retribution only towards the one who committed a crime.

In other words, one is allowed to attack those who attack you first, in self-defense ONLY, and having also met many conditions.

The "infidel" or "unbeliever" mentioned in the Qur'an are people who invaded people's lands and would rape, pillage and murder people in their homes. THEN it was allowed to go after the invader. It was NOT anyone who is not Muslim.

Please take a little bit of time out to learn about what you have not yet learned. It will benefit you well.

So, tell me, where does the Constitution mention, "Judaeo-Christian religious freedom"? This country was supposed to support religious freedom, not any specific religion. As usual, someone is putting their thoughts and religious views into what they think the founding fathers meant. Research deeply into all the founding fathers of this country. What you find will probably shake your little Judaeo-Christian attitude.

          4. Brad's Avatar Brad

It is not fair to take one line from the bible and use it to paint the entire religion. I would suggest that it would be extremely easy to do the same for any religious belief.

To say Islam is hateful is simply wrong. Yes some are using snippets of the Koran to justify killing. But many Christians use snippets to justify violence, bigotry and and racism.

To believe that one way is the only way is inevitably going to lead to violence

Those who "blow up innocents, calling for the demise of Israel, teaching children songs of death to America, beheading those who do not convert, disemboweling homosexuals etc. is condemned in Islam. These people who promote and act on these actions are no more Muslims than your KKK buddies. Just because they CLAIM to be Muslims does not mean they are, just like KKK members are not Christian, even though they claim to be.

What evil are you talking about? Please give specific examples which relate to Islam.

Amazing that you can write things about the Muslim faith that are so untrue. Are you just writing what you have heard or have you done research? Musilims, Christians, and Jews have lived together in peace for centuries in many parts of the world. India is an example as is medieval Spain.

It is radical groups that came to these places and attacked the other groups, Christians in Spain and the Middle East (Crusades) among others and the Jews in Israel/Palestine. Muslims in Egypt are jailing people as non believers.

Each of these groups are radicals that are convincing others that they are the correct way and the path to heaven. All religions also attack other members of the same religion because they are a different sect.

Yes, hate crimes have and are rising and it is being caused by people in power.

the very first thing done when new comers arrived in new world was to dedicate the country to the spread of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Pilgrims drafted the "Mayflower Compact." This historical document "emphasizes religious themes and political loyalties that are reflected in later charters and state constitutions." This governing document specifically stated that they came to the New World in the "name of God . . . . for the glory of God and the advancement of the Christian faith." This Christian based document has been heralded as one of the most essential documents to the development of America. Frank R. Donovan states that this document became the "foundation stone of American liberty." The document became the governing document of the Pilgrims when they finally did arrive in Plymouth on December 22nd 1620. As Gary Demar mentioned "Plymouth was first a religious society, second, an economic enterprise, and last, a political commonwealth governed by biblical standards." you can also read whole article on the true history of

God is not mentioned by name in the Declaration of Independence. The only inference of a deity mentioned is, "..... and endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights ...". Even in that time the framers recognized and supported the reality that America was a land of many different religions, only one being Christianity. The United States of America was not formed as a Christian nation. It was formed with the ideals of a truly free nation. Maybe someday we might achieve that ideal.

Islam is based on a false book. The Quran was written by Muhammad over a 20-year period. Not one single prophecy in the Quran has ever been fulfilled. Not one piece of archeological evidence can confirm anything in the Quran. It is a false book.

How do you figure that the Qur'an is a "false book"? No, Muhammad did not write the Qur'an. He was illiterate. Nice try, though. What prophecies are written in the Qur'an?

What archaeological evidence can confirm the Bible? There is no Global Flood of Noah, no evidence of the Garden of Eden, and not even any evidence of the "great Exodus from Egypt."

How do you figure "GOD ALL of a SUDDEN CHANGED and forgot about His word The HOLY BIBLE that took 1500 years to Complete"? Look at the difference between the Old and New Testament. If anything, THAT is God changing from "hairy thunderer" to "marshmallow deity."

You said, "Also Angel Gabriel was THE Angel GOD SENT to The Virgin Mary an told her She would bare the SAVIOR". Can Gabriel only appear to one person?

You said, "Muhamad was a False prophet the BIBLE warned about many times over". What qualifications do you think apply to Muhammad?

Regarding Jihad, do you even know the definitions of Jihad? Maybe you should learn.

The Arabic word "jihad" is often translated as "holy war," but in a purely linguistic sense, the word " jihad" means struggling or striving.

The arabic word for war is: "al-harb".

In a religious sense, as described by the Quran and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, "jihad" has many meanings. It can refer to internal as well as external efforts to be a good Muslims or believer, as well as working to inform people about the faith of Islam.

To make it simple, the major definition of Jihad means "inner struggle" which means the struggles we all go through in knowing what to do and what NOT to do in life. It is not just some war attitude.

Obviously, you have never attended seminary, let alone ever took any classes to learn about other religions, especially Islam. Your claims are completely inaccurate in nearly every case. Let me address a few of your errors:

How do you know God did NOT send an angel? What contradiction is there in the Bible which addresses this?

If God does not change, then why did "his" actions change so dramatically from Old Testament to the New?

How do you KNOW that the Qur'an is "not from the One TRUE GOD"?

About your inaccurate claim about eradicating Christians:

Quran also says that the followers of other religions are safe and no fear shall be upon them

“Surely they that believe, and those of Jewry, and the Christians, and those Sabeaans, who so believes in God and the Last Day, and works righteousness–their wage waits them with their Lord, and no fear shall be on them, neither shall they sorrow.”[ Al-Ma'idah 69]

The permission given in Quran 22:40-41 to fight was only given to “those against whom war is waged.” And fighting wasn’t just to defend Muslims from persecution – but to defend Christians, Jews, and people of all faiths. All subsequent verses addressing fighting are pre-conditioned on these clearly outlined rules of self-defense. Otherwise, it’s cherry picking, something the Quran forbids as perverse.

Qur’an 5.51 O you who believe! do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends; they are friends of each other.

This is a mistake because it had to do with accepting them, not as friends but as protectors. This was when the Christians and Jews were persecuting the Muslims. That being said, know that Muslims are commanded to respect Christians and Jews (and people of other religions as well) as Jews and Christians worship the same God of Abraham.

Qur’an 9.73 O Prophet! strive hard against the unbelievers and the hypocrites and be unyielding to them. On this one, same issue. The Qur'an is not condemning anyone who is not Muslim, but again, those who were well known for murdering people, even in their own homes!

WHERE in the Qur'an does it mention anything about receiving 72 virgins? (Hint: It doesn't. That was generated by some bigoted hate-mongers to cause division.)

Apparently, you are also unaware that Muslims DO accept Jesus as not only the greatest prophet of God but also as a savior.

I could go on and on about this topic for many days, as I used to do professionally, but I wonder if you are even going to read what I have posted. About now, you are probably assuming heavily that I am Muslim, right? If you would assume that, you are completely wrong. I am educated in the field of comparative world religions, but by no means of ANY of the three Abrahamic faiths, Judaism, Christianity or Islam. (Yes, Islam is an Abrahamic religion.)

I noticed that you did not give any citation for the passages in the Qur'an. How can you be so certain that the Qur'an does, in fact, promise 72 virgins?

Why should I ask radicalists who claim to be Muslim? (By the way, it is not "my radical islam" as I am not Muslim. For that matter, I am not of any of the three Abrahamic faiths, Judaism, Christianity or Islam.) Again, with this issue of radicalists, I have posted where the Qur'an has shown where suicide bombing or ANY form of terrorism is condemned, NOT condoned.

About deception, again, you have given no reference to show there is any conflict. What you talk about your "true religion" using your term "True God" is based PURELY on your personal faith-based beliefs. Given that it is all based on faith, how can you condemn one faith over another as there is nothing substantial or empirical about either one?

You keep bringing up false prophets, yet you have not shown how Muhammad has been shown to be a false prophet. Any examples at all? Remember, Islam states that Muhammad is the LAST prophet of God and not the ONLY one.

Because two groups have different perspectives of your Jesus, how can you demand that one is right and the other is wrong? My usual example of this in classes is to think about the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. A honeymoon couple will see it and think that it is extremely romantic. A mechanical engineer will look at it, claiming it is quite a feat of engineering given the time of its building. A Parisian looks at it and thinks it should have been torn down decades ago and is an old "rust bucket". Who is the "one true right one"? Are they not all three right for their perceptions? The same applies to how you see Jesus. The Muslim sees Jesus as the Greatest Prophet of God and savior, you add one quality - "son of God". The Jews do not see Jesus as a "son of God" so how come you are not condemning Judaism?

            See the difficulties here?

Who is the "false teacher" of which you mention? I do hope you do not mean me, given that I need no prayer. I have an upper education in the field. Have you?

I do not need salvation, either. Why would you think I do? Given you do not even know what my religions happen to be, how can you judge what I need and what I do not need?

            I await your response.

The point was for Abraham to demonstrate that he trusted God completely and placed him above all else, even his own son.1 Though God of course already knew that Abraham had faith in him, it was necessary for Abraham to prove it through action. I don't believe in any gods. But I do love the Buddhist idea and I think it explains why all the religions have it wrong. To name or describe god is to limit it. What did the Buddha say on god? To be silent. (I'm no expert but that is what I remember from my course on Indian Philosophy)

John - Close about what Siddhartha Gautama said about theistic beliefs and any deity. He remained silent on the subject because it was irrelevant as to what he was teaching, which, put very simply, was A way, not THE way, to alleviate self-created suffering.

Yes, Buddhists can believe in a deity. If they believe in Christianity, they are Christian Buddhists. There are also Jewish Buddhists and atheist Buddhists.

There are also many misunderstandings about Buddhism. Some will say that Buddhism says "all life is suffering." Not true. Siddhartha taught that "in life, there is suffering." There is also joy, confusion, sadness, glee, peace, etc.

The other point which is almost always misquoted is that "the cause of suffering is desire." Again, no. The cause of suffering is ATTACHMENT to desires.

Thank you, John, for bringing up the topic.

One question: How does Buddhism explain how all religions have it wrong? Remember, Buddhism, along with Taoism, Confucianism and other non-theistic religions are still religions.

King James had them written for the Church of England in response to the perceived problems with earlier versions as pushed by the Puritan faction of the Church of England. It was a response to the Geneva Bible of the Puritans. The scholars who worked on it didn't have the best access to the oldest texts. They also didn't read Greek very well. a. The constitution says nothing about Islam one way or another.

        b. Yes, you may not be a racist, however you are very bigoted religiously.

        c. Your claim that Islam says "Convert or die" and "Kill your enemies" is inaccurate as well.

        “ There is no compulsion in religion…” (Qur’an, 2:256)

“Had your Lord wanted, all the people on earth would have believed. So will you force people to believe?” (Qur’an, 10:99)

“He does not forbid you to deal kindly and justly with anyone who has not fought you for your faith and driven you out of your homes, God loves the just.” (Qur’an, 60:8)

        About "Kill your enemies"?

“…seize them and kill them wherever you find them…” (Qur’an, 4:91) This one? Let me explain what on earth that means, and no, you are not taking it at all what you think it is to be taken.

Let’s identify the pronouns in the verse we quoted: “…seize them and kill them wherever you find them …” (Qur’an, 4:91). There is only one pronoun, “them,” used three times, and it’s pretty clear that it refers to the same group of people. This group of people referred to as “them” can only be identified if we look at the verses before and after.

Looking at the preceding verses we learn the following:

Verse 88 tells us that the pronoun “them” is referring to hypocrites who pretend to be Muslim on the outside but are actually spies and informants.

Verse 89 tells us that if these hypocrites turn and fight you, then you are allowed to fight them back.

Verse 90 tells us that Muslims are not allowed to touch anyone who does not want to fight.

In this example, it becomes crystal clear that “them” is referring to a group of hypocrites who are trying to harm and kill the Muslims. It would have been sufficient in this case to simply quote more of the verse: “So if they neither withdraw, nor offer you peace, nor restrain themselves from fighting you, then seize them and kill them wherever you find them: We give you clear authority against these type of people.” (Qur’an, 4:91)

Now, compare this to what is written in Deuteronomy and tell me that it is part of the Bible as a "religion of peace":

In Deuteronomy 7:1-3: “When the Lord your God brings you into the land… and you have defeated them, then you must destroy them totally. Make no treaty with them, and show them no mercy. Do not intermarry with them…”

In Deuteronomy 20:10-17: “When you march up to attack a city, make its people an offer of peace. If they accept and open their gates, all the people in it shall be subject to forced labor and shall work for you. If they refuse to make peace and they engage you in battle, then lay siege to that city. When the Lord your God delivers it into your hand, put to the sword all the men in it. As for the women, the children, the livestock and everything else in the city, you may take these as plunder for yourselves.

In Deuteronomy 20:16-17: “However, in the cities of the nations the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance do not leave alive anything that breathes. Completely destroy them…”

In Numbers 31:17-18: “Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.”

Jesus is reported to have said in Luke 19:27: “But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me.’”

Now, please back up your claims, please.

Someone is going to cross the line, not only of civility but of law.

This is one of the many issues of our time and the world's human fabric will be tested and stretched. Individuals that cause violence and do physical damage will suffer consequences, there is no escape from that, even if it is denied by individual perpetrator. However, when the consequence doesn't meet the approval of others, that causes yet another consequence. First, before all the nonsense, you must understand that Islam is not a religion it is a way of life. A way of life that was founded by a very bad person. A man, who among other downfalls, evil ways, treating women poorly (to put in mildly) and had sex with a child. To those who still have their head buried in the sand, wake up. And if President Trump has made it easier for people to speak the truth, then thank God for that!

Alan - So, you have not studied ANYTHING about Islam, either, I see. Islam IS a religion. You remind me of the ignorant person who claims "Christianity is not a religion, it is a relationship!" There are two definitions of the term "religion" which apply here:

        a. a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs. (As in theistic religion)

        b. a moral/ethical practice. (As in both theistic and non-theistic religions)

HOW was Muhammad a bad person? What evil ways are you talking about? How did he "treat women poorly"? Sex with a child? Not in the Qur'an. It mentions nothing about that.

If Mr. 45 has made it easier for people to speak the truth, then why doesn't HE start speaking the truth and use facts, instead of lying about almost anything he discusses?

Which "god" do you want to thank for Mr. 45's immoral actions?

Fact 1 The Quran requires that you read it in full. No “cafeteria Quran” here. As Quran 3:8 says, “We believe in it, the whole is from our Lord.” Isis and Islamophobes instead cherry pick. Quran 3:8 pre-emptively calls out people who cherry pick as “perverse” people, declaring, “…those in whose hearts is perversity seek discord and wrong interpretation of [the Quran].”

But don’t some verses of the Quran in fact say, “kill them where ye find them?”

00:30 / 00:30 TOP ARTICLES 1/6 Will the heatwave help or hurt the UK economy?

Independent - Daily Highlights Watch Full Screen Yes, hence we get to fact two.

Fact 2 Islam is a practical faith that permits self-defence in certain strict situations. When? Let the Quran explain.

First, the Prophet Muhammad and his companions patiently bore vehement persecution in Mecca for nearly 13 years. This included a three-year starvation boycott from which his wife Khadija later died. Muslims didn’t fight back.

Next, Muhammad sent some companions to seek refuge in Abyssinia under a Christian King, and Muslims still didn’t fight back. Third, when the Prophet’s companions even asked to fight back, Muhammad responded clearly, “I have not been given permission to fight.” And, finally, when the persecution became unbearable, Muhammad and the Muslims simply left Mecca – still refusing to fight back.

These refugees trekked 240 miles through the desert to escape terrorism, finally arriving in the predominantly Jewish city of Medina. If Islam taught terrorism and enforced Sharia, this was the time to demonstrate this. Instead, Prophet Muhammad formed the Constitution of Medina with the Jews, establishing a unified secular state.

Yet the extremists trying to kill Muslims in Mecca pursued the Muslims to kill them in Medina. And now – finally – the Quran addressed fighting for the first time, permitting Muslims to fight in self-defence.

Additionally, Quran 2:193-194 declares that Muslims may only fight active combatants. Meaning, even if during battle an enemy combatant asks for amnesty, you must grant it. In Islam, there’s no such thing as “collateral damage,” mutilation, or torture. All this notwithstanding, fact three issues the death blow to Daesh and Islamophobe ideology.

There is much more which might help you to understand that your perceptions of Islam and Muslims is quite inaccurate.

John - By any chance, do you mean Muslims? Muslims adhere to the Qur'an far better than a good percentage of those of other religions, including Christianity, even though all three groups worship the same deity.

Again, please do not take groups like ISIS, the Taliban and al Qaida as Muslim, because these groups twist what the Qur'an actually says to make it fit their willful ignorance.

But the rise to power of the liberal agenda has resulted from the fact that the people of western societies have irrationally demanded that governments take care of them and manage their lives instead of protecting their property rights. This misconception results in massive violations of those rights while permitting government officials to act out their own and their constituents' psychopathology. The liberal agenda gratifies various types of pathological dependency; augments primitive feelings of envy and inferiority; reinforces paranoid perceptions of victimization; implements manic delusions of grandeur; exploits government authority for power, domination and revenge; and satisfies infantile claims to entitlement, indulgence and compensation. "DAN You keep joining Nazism Groups an the KKK like they are the Same an they are Not. also who are you to decide that the KKK aren’t Christians?"

How are they NOT the same? They are terrorists. How are the KKK NOT Christian? Simple. Do they operate in the same way that the Bible supposedly teaches?

"ISIS an other terrorist Muslims are fighting a JIHAD an that comes from Muslims . who are you to say those Fighters aren’t Muslims?"

Again, if a particular group operates in a manner which goes COUNTER to the teachings of their own holy book, how can you claim they are what they claim? Their actions show that they are not.

Do you even know what the term "Jihad" means and what it encompasses? My guess is that you are going on what others have told you, but you have not learned it personally.

Let me assist you a bit: Islam distinguishes four ways by which the duty of jihad can be fulfilled: by the heart, the tongue, the hand, and the sword. The first consists in a spiritual purification of one’s own heart by doing battle with the devil and overcoming his inducements to evil. The propagation of Islam through the tongue and hand is accomplished in large measure by supporting what is right and correcting what is wrong.

In essence, it is an INNER struggle with one's self, determining what is right and wrong and which action one is going to take.

The "fourth", which is the least used, is "by the sword". This does not mean that it is going after anyone who is not Muslim. It is going against those who are attacking the Muslim. This came about because during the time of the writings, there was a great deal of attacks and invasions on people in their homes, which would end up in raping, pillaging and murdering people. This "jihad" was to go after them in an act of self-defense for self and others, and NOT anyone who disagrees with Islam.

Acts of terrorism are AGAINST Islam, not promoted.

Only two groups in our society promote the “Quran teaches terrorism” myth: anti-Muslim pundits and Isis extremists. Both are wrong.

This simplistic conclusion ignores that many groups in many countries are experiencing terror right now. It ignores the international arms trade from powerful western nations that wholly disregards human rights and has caused the death of more than 60,000 children in Yemen. And it ignores the fact that as Somalians suffer a massive famine Western media virtually ignores them – as it has ignored the Syrian crisis for the last several years.

Yet with attacks in Egypt, London and Syria, critics default to blaming the Quran, citing its allegedly “violent” verses. We cannot resolve the Syrian, Yemeni and Somalia atrocities until we adhere to justice. Blaming the Quran for terrorism is not only demonstrably false, it wastes precious resources that could be spent on stopping war and famine.

The Quran requires that you read it in full.

Now, if you want to bring up the Bible, there are many passages there which promote acts of violence without any preconditions. Look at the issue of killing those who become apostates of the Jewish and Christian faiths. It demands the killing of them. Not so with the Qur'an.

My guess at this time is that you will say "you are full of it" even though I give you facts and not just rumors I have heard from others, as it seems you have.

I look forward to your response.

Of real interest is how US religious groups are reacting to much repeated Islamic slogans such as “Islam is a Religion of Peace”. Is it understood that “Peace” in Islam has a totally different meaning than the word has as we commonly use it in a pluralistic Western Democracy? In Islam “Peace” refers to a condition in which ALL people of the world are either converted to Islam, or live under Islamic political domination and control. Until then JIHAD must continue until “Peace” is accomplished.

Now, AFTER you have read these, please explain how these terrorists are Muslim, especially given where the Qur'an condemns terrorism. Need sources for that, too?

The permission given in Quran 22:40-41 to fight in self-defence was not only granted to defend Muslims from persecution, but to defend Christians, Jews and people of all faiths from acts of terror like those committed by Isis today

According to Islam, God Almighty says in the Holy Qur’an: ‘No bearer of burdens can bear the burden of another’ (Surah al-Isra 17:15).”

If anyone slays a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew all people. And if anyone saves a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all people. Quran 5:32

Invite all to the way of your Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching. And argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious... And if you punish, let your punishment be proportional to the wrong that has been done to you. But if you show patience, that is indeed the best course. Be patient, for your patience is from God. And do not grieve over them, or distress yourself because of their plots. For God is with those who restrain themselves, and those who do good. Quran 16:125-128

Oh you who believe! Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to God, even against yourselves, or your parents, or your kin, and whether it be against rich or poor, for God can best protect both. Follow not the cravings of your hearts, lest you swerve, and if you distort justice or decline to do justice, verily God is well acquainted with all that you do. Quran 4:135

Well, weather changes. That's what it does. That's why we call it weather. If it didn't change, we wouldn't have a vocabulary for it. I am not alone. A multitude of meteorologists agree with me. Contrary to the false doctrine to which you must adhere. "98% of all scientists concur." Total bullshit. You can't even poll 1/5 of the scientists, so you don't have a clue what they think. If so, why don't we just put on Swastika armbands and the white hoods and sheets and start burning crosses on lawns and lynching and gassing those that we hate to death and stop making any pretense any longer of being "loving and forgiving people" and get it over with and out in the open?!!! As a "Christian" (if that is what you actually are), you should certainly be worried about agreeing with The Satanic Bible and The Church of Satan about anything whatsoever, except, possibly, the time of day or the weather (and, even then, checking some other sources about those things!) and their saying to hate other people should certainly give you abundant reason to doubt your position!!! Jesus met and confronted other self-righteous people, such as yourself, who agreed with diabolical thinking, as you do, and told them "You are of your father the devil, and you want to carry out his desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a liar and the father of lies" (John 8:44).

No, I do not hate murder, rape, home invasions, molestation or terrorism. I disagree with it and condemn it, but I do not hate the concept. If you believe that your omniscient deity hates, then I would have to ask you, "What is it that you believe that God happens to be afraid of or ignorant about?" “I’d like to punch him in the face”

Trump said this in front of a crowd of supporters, after a protester was removed from one of his rallies in Las Vegas on 23 February 2016.

“Part of the problem is no one wants to hurt each other anymore”

Trump said something very close to this at a tense rally in St. Louis, Missouri in March 2016. Protesters repeatedly disrupted the then-candidate’s stump speech, prompting Trump to call for their removal on several occasions, in no uncertain terms, urging “Get ’em out of here.”

“The audience hit back. That’s what we need a little bit more of”

Trump said this at a press conference in Palm Beach, Florida on 11 March 2016. He was referring to the Las Vegas incident weeks earlier, after which he mused that he would like to have punched a protester in the face.

“If you do (hurt him), I’ll defend you in court, don’t worry about it”

Trump said this during another rally in March 2016, this time at Macomb County Community College in Warren, Michigan. The familiar pattern was on display — a small group of protesters outstays their welcome and are forcibly removed from the venue, and Trump encourages violence among his followers.

“I’ll beat the crap out of you”

At a rally in Kansas City, Missouri on 12 March 2016, Trump riffed on an incident earlier in the day in Dayton, Ohio, when a protester attempted to storm the stage he was on, before being dragged away by Secret Service agents.

“Knock the crap out of him, would you? I promise you, I will pay your legal fees”

Trump said this at a rally in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in February 2016, although the quotation is truncated. A week earlier, in Iowa City, a protester threw a tomato at the candidate as he was delivering his stump speech.

There were many muslims at the college I attended, and some were my classmates and friends. The ones I knew best were a young woman from Morocco and another who was Palestinian from Gaza. When I was gone for Succot, the Palestinian loaned me her notes from my days absent. There were many others there, from Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, with whom I chatted sometimes, but I will not say they were my friends-- just acquaintances.
I had some Egyptian friends in New Jersey, too, who taught me a few expressions in their dialect.
Also, in Guang Zhou, China, I met some muslim men who were buying large quantities of cell-phones. They stayed at the same hotel as my Chinese wife and I. We would drink coffee together and eat sweet rolls, and chat.

If a socialist is white or black, it makes no difference at all to me. They are an enemy of humanity because they are socialist. I don't care if you hate me, but stop being a moron and hating me for things I am not. In other words, if I deserve your hate, ridicule, or criticism, you shouldn't have to INVENT things about me. Then who was responsible for the Crusades hundreds of years ago?

    1. Carrie's Avatar Carrie

The Christian church used the crusades as propaganda to rid Europe of "knights" and "petty lords" who insisted on fighting one another. It was all about a massive land grab and theft of riches on a grand scale. The Teuton knights killed Jews protected by their own king on the way to the war, as well as killing, cooking and eating women and children! These descendants of the Vikings were still so violent that they were told "If you are not a Christian, you have no soul. If you have no soul, you are an animal." It was said that the streets of Jerusalem ran red with blood. The "knights" ransacked the city and killed anyone they could, Christian, Jew or Muslim. It had been a peaceful place of pilgrimage for hundreds of years before that! Even today, the keys of the "Holy Seplucher" are guarded by a Muslim family! When the Muslims retook the city they killed very few and charged a token ransom for those who wished to leave. There were a total of 14 crusades, the last few were in Europe against "heretical" Christians. So they were even killing their own! In the end, propaganda has declared that Islam is bad, and suckers the world over (both in the faith and out) have subscribed to it. They are no more evil than anyone else, and deserve to pray as they wish. Those who "hate" them today are slobs who are looking to blame their troubles on someone else and the garbage mouthed ass in the white house plays to them.

Mr. Trump is very obviously pandering to his Right Wing Christian supporters. Both State and Legislative branches have "elected" officials who are proposing and passing bills of law that promote Christianity and discriminate most other religions. Remember fellow Pastors/Ministers and purveyors of faith, the United States of America was founded upon the principles of Freedom of Religion and Freedom of Speech. Even though the current President chooses to bypass the Constitution's Foundation of Checks & Balances with Executive Orders and referred to Africa as a country rather than a Continent, All Americans have a duty to their country to not support Anti-American actions.

Because 911 terrorists were Muslim does NOT mean All Muslims are terrorists, nor does it indicate Muslims should be treated differently or thought of as less than.

If that illogical and baseless group-think prevailed, what would the future of Christianity be if one considers Timothy McVeigh (1995) a white Christian, Terry Nichols (1995) a white Christian or Ted Kaczynski (1978-1996) a white Christian?

Of real interest is how US religious groups are reacting to much repeated Islamic slogans such as “Islam is a Religion of Peace”. Is it understood that “Peace” in Islam has a totally different meaning than the word has as we commonly use it in a pluralistic Western Democracy? In Islam “Peace” refers to a condition in which ALL people of the world are either converted to Islam, or live under Islamic political domination and control. Until then JIHAD must continue until “Peace” is accomplished.

Many terms/concepts in Islam are far different from our common understanding.

The Koran In about the time it takes to watch a professional sports event, you can comprehend the Koran. Since the Koran is famously known to be unreadable, how can this be? The Koran found in the bookstore is not the historical Koran of Mohammed. The original Koran was a story that unfolded as Mohammed’s life situations changed. The bookstore Koran is arranged by length of chapter, not time. The bookstore Koran has no time, no Mohammed and no story. Therefore, it makes no sense. Using statistical methods to select the verses, A Two-Hour Koran has woven Mohammed’s life back into the Koran itself. Now the verses have context and meaning. Everything is in the right order and the original story has been restored. Once you have read A Two-Hour Koran, you can pick up a bookstore Koran and understand what you are reading.

Exodus Moses murders an Egyptian after making sure that no one is looking. 2:11-12

To commemorate the divine massacre of the Egyptian children, Moses instructs the Israelites to "sacrifice to the Lord all that openeth the matrix" -- all the males, that is. God has no use for dead, burnt female bodies. 13:2, 12, 15

Joshua, with God's approval, kills the Amalekites "with the edge of the sword." 17:13

It's okay to beat your slaves; even if they die you won't be punished, just as long as they survive a day or two after the beating (see verses 21:20-21). But avoid excessive damage to their eyes or teeth. Otherwise you may have to set them free. 21:26-27

Again, these are just in Exodus. There are many more citations which show that violence IS promoted (in addition to slavery and other heinous crimes) in the Bible.

Veronica - What symbols of Islam were ever IN the White House? Are you thinking that maybe Mr. Obama, a devout Christian, was Muslim, as his antagonists would claim?

    2. Dan Atatakai's Avatar Dan Atatakai

Joseph - How is hating Muslims, as Mr. 45 does as shown by his many discriminations he has imposed upon them, be peaceful? While he may not be the "cause of hate" toward Muslims, he sure promotes it well. Muslims are NOT the ones causing acts of terrorism, as the Qur'an condemns terrorism.

The permission given in Quran 22:40-41 to fight in self-defense was not only granted to defend Muslims from persecution, but to defend Christians, Jews and people of all faiths from acts of terror like those committed by Isis today. Only two groups in our society promote the “Quran teaches terrorism” myth: anti-Muslim pundits and Isis extremists. Both are wrong.

The Quran requires that you read it in full.

Quran 2:193-194 declares that Muslims may only fight active combatants. Meaning, even if during battle an enemy combatant asks for amnesty, you must grant it. In Islam, there’s no such thing as “collateral damage,” mutilation, or torture. All this notwithstanding, fact three issues the death blow to Daesh and Islamophobe ideology.

It must be taken into consideration that in the Holy Quran murder is forbidden but the death penalty imposed by the state for a crime is permitted.

“… whoso kills a soul, unless it be for murder or for wreaking corruption in the land, it shall be as if he had killed all mankind; and he who saves a life, it shall be as if he had given life to all mankind .”[ Al-Ma'idah 32]

Terrorism cannot be of a religious motive because in the Islamic law it is forbidden to attempt to impose Islam on others coercing people into adopting any religion. The Qur’an says:

“There is no compulsion in religion. The right way has become distinct from error.” [Al-Baqarah 256] Islamic law also forbids aggressive warfare. The Quran says:

“But if the enemies incline towards peace, do you also incline towards peace. And trust in God! For, he is the one who hears and knows all things.” [Al-Anfal 61]

I suggest actually learning what the Qur'an says, as well as what your Bible states about violence. I think you might be a bit surprised.

The sad reality is that many Americans harbored feelings of fear and anger at Muslims in general. They watched hundreds killed on 911 and have witnessed thousands more killed around the world and in the United States since without the Islamic community standing up against the terrorists. After an attack the news reports that they were influenced by an Imam or other leader in a Mosque in the United States yet not one member of the Mosque spoke out to stop it or criticized it. All the while the Muslim community world wide has supported Sharia and the aggressive campaign to have it rule world wide, a recent survey of Muslims worldwide showed that almost 70% of Muslims supported violent terrorist activities to implement Sharia Law. With that in mind...the past administration went as far as not calling terrorism what it is, terrorism, it refused to identify many terrorists as Muslim for fear of alienating the community. Trump has not been so lenient, he says what he thinks. This has emboldened some of those Americans to step up and take action, good or bad. I think the Islamic community itself can help curb the hate crimes if they spoke out against the terrorists and replaced the hate mongering Imams of the Mosques with leaders working for peace. We can live together and in peace but you cant support hate and expect the other side not to recognize it.

I think the acts of the extreem Muslim terrorists cause the hate against Islam. The San Berdino shooting, the Boston bombing, the Ohio State Sirian refugee who ran down Americans with a car and the hundreds or thousands of other attacks around the world. Second is the actions of the muslims who riot and protest and demand cultures to change to appease them and their religion. Third the stories about crimes and scams these foreigners commit. The stories of them taking advantage of goverment programs such as wellfare, food stamps (or what ever cute name it has now), and medical programs. Look at another group who came to America in large numbers, the Vietnamese. After the war in the 70s, they mostly worked hard, unlike many of the stories about muslims, they never as a group demanded anything, and now the Vietnamese Americans are accepted in our society as Americans.

For what it's worth, I've taught graduate students in advanced statistics courses for more than 20 years. So I am very knowledgeable about research methods, and especially quantitative analysis. I've also read the original report by the research team. It might be worth noting that the team itself does not find a strong causation link. It seems, based on the title of this article and several of the statements contained in the body, that there is a push to find a strong causal connection. The numbers simply do not bear that proposition out. Since correlation examines the association between variables, with the product being the way they "covary," there needs to be an important understanding that correlation does not equal causation. More precisely, the analytical methods used -- such as ANOVA and what appears to be nonparametric statistics -- do not provide us with a strong enough correlation to support the hypothesis or relationship probabilities. It is important also to note that the researchers identified the correlation, and their primary publication was about the correlation, while at the same time recognizing that the testing for relationships was minimally applied. Within the academic community, the study has, of course, garnered some criticism, especially among those who find the focus on correlation without significant testing for causality to be a null issue when compared to the total question of causation. What I would like to see is the researches move to the next phases of their analysis. To satisfy my own curiosity, I obtained the dataset in question and did some basic calculations. My focus was on the use of regression -- univariate, bivariate, and multivariate – as a means of testing regression analysis against correlation analysis. Since the published study was more of correlation analysis, it did not provide us the necessary results to allow for a true test of causation. What this boils down to is the research itself was fine, but the reporting on the research has gone two-steps too far in making the connection for causation purposes. This article, along with others I’ve read considering this paper, has oversimplified and casually drawn conclusions that do not exist in the actual dataset. One of the beautiful things about the academic publication process is that we expect access to the datasets in question as a means of being able to retest the numbers. I've done that with this dataset and have taken it to the higher levels of analysis. My first steps were to examine the numbers while looking at both the correlation coefficient (r) and the coefficient of determination (r2). By testing with regression analysis, I was better able to statistically prove whether two or more interval or ratio-level variables are related and whether the change in one variable is related in any way to the movement in the other (bivariate) or more variables (multivariate regression analysis). The shape of the regression line is an indication of how much of the change is the dependent variable explains the independent variable. In this case, the question of how the Trump tweets impact anti-Muslim sentiment is best tested with regression analysis. The regression equation indicates how steep the line must be and whether it slopes to the right or left or is curvilinear. One who examines the findings (or better still, can obtain the original dataset with the instrument used for testing) will likely find that while there is a correlation, the curve the relationship line is not of the type and shape to allow us to draw conclusions that the independent variable (tweets) has a causal relationship with the dependent variable (sentiments). To close, let me simply say that the questions are good, the intent – if done for scientific or knowledge purposes – is also good. At the same time, with coverage like this, we are finding too many instances where causation decisions are being made without sufficient data to support them.

Sez God, “ I command you to eat all the other species... or just kill them as needed. We shall eat only a few chosen foods. Poison the others. Flatten the hills. Damn the rivers. This I command unto you as I don’t have time to do it myself. Love only me and kill those that don’t believe. Invent idols called money. Put my name on it. Trust me. Make borders. Make walls. Make clocks. Make prisons. Make weapons, lots of them. I’d do it myself but I’m putting some new rings on Saturn. I (wink wink) made y’all in my image. Yeah, that’s right...that’s what I did. I must say after reading many of these comments I feel sad. Religion is supposed to bring inner peace. But so many are using it for hate. And in looking at these comments it is disturbing

I know many man Muslims. And never once have I been threatened, felt scared or been told my religion issues wrong (I have been told by fellow Christians that my acceptance of some people as friends is wrong)

Acceptance and love. For who others are, not who we thing they should be.

If you were to look at only these comments you would believe that my religion, Christianity, os full of hate.

Trump's tweets happen to be occurring at the same time as the world is reacting to pro-Islamic extremism, but the two phenomena are basically unrelated. There are many other things that coincide with pro-Islamic extremism that are also unrelated. It shows a really desperate stretch to try and connect these two particular things. I noticed Toys-R-Us is closing down. That is coinciding with anti-Islamic sentiment AND the Trump presidency, but only a moron would say it has to do with either of those things. Just one example.

As an aside, the graffiti on the building in the photo might well have been painted by a muslim, just to draw pity. They have been known to do that on more than one occasion, one being announced yesterday in Texas. Be that as it may, whoever did it, did not want the graffiti to clash with the color of the curtains and the color of the Arabic and English letters on the brick wall. Anyone else notice that? Also, they named a false god on the wall, and mis-spelled "worshipper".

Sharia Law was put down on paper to unite the tribes of what is now Saudi Arabia. To keep all tribes happy items that offend other religions are still allow. The problem with Islam is that no one can question outdated passages in the Quran. It is carve in stone and to question means death. Another problem is not all Muslims in the US like Muslims that are not of their country. These Muslims are from 80 different nations who might be equal in Mecca do not feel they are that way in the US. Like the Middle East Muslims have no problem in attacking each other Holy sites that war over there has not come to the US, so far. Think of yourself being a Muslim in Syria. Which side do you choose since all those fighting are Muslims. The hate among each tribe runs deep. They attack the US, Israel, each other as not being faithful to Islam and only one side will win this conflict. By the end of the day it does not matter what Trump says about a religion that in their holy book says it is right to kill all those who are not of the faith. Read Sharia Law if you see any part of it being wrong to your faith then your head shall part your body. Just saying.

    1. Stephanie Willey's Avatar Stephanie Willey

Sharia law is the invention of Wahhabism, an ultra-conservative, radical adaptation of Islam that first appeared very early in the 20th century. Wahhabism is the practice of Islam that demands that the individual submit to their rules and their's alone. Saudi Arabia today practices strict Wahhabism. It is a perversion of the Islam of Mohammad and is the driving force that keeps the two main factions of Islam, Sunni and Shia basically at war with each other. Wahhabism is a perversion of Islam in the same way that radical evangelicalism is a perversion of Christianity. ALL of the radical Islamic cults, ISIS,
Al-Shabaab, Al Quada, and the Muslim Brotherhood are all direct offshoots of Wahhabism. Mohammad's original vision of Islam is as simple and beautiful an the simple lessons of love taught by Jesus. Throw away the Old Testament, the various phobia's of Paul, and the radical fatwa's of modern radical Islam and you may find that the two belief systems are much more alike than different.

  1. Dan Atatakai's Avatar Dan Atatakai

Secretary - Sorry, but you are sadly mistaken about Islam. It is against the Qur'an to offend people of other religions. They are to be respected.

You claim that Muslims are ordered to kill anyone who is not Muslim. First. that is not true. Apparently, you do not understand the terminology of "kafir". I will explain in a moment.

What do you believe the Bible says about those who are apostates to Judaism or Christianity? It says to stone them to death. Is that "Christian" in nature?

Deuteronomy 13 6 “If your brother, the son of your mother, your son or your daughter, the wife of your bosom, or your friend who is as your own soul, secretly entices you, saying, ‘Let us go and serve other gods,’ which you have not known, neither you nor your fathers, 7 of the gods of the people which are all around you, near to you or far off from you, from one end of the earth to the other end of the earth, 8 you shall not [d]consent to him or listen to him, nor shall your eye pity him, nor shall you spare him or conceal him; 9 but you shall surely kill him; your hand shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterward the hand of all the people. 10 And you shall stone him with stones until he dies, because he sought to entice you away from the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. 11 So all Israel shall hear and fear, and not again do such wickedness as this among you."

As for the term kafir, which some have translated incorrectly, it does NOT mean "unbeliever" as someone of another religion, but those who are invaders, who would rape, pillage and murder those in their homes or keep the Muslim from praying or attending the pilgrimage to Mecca. The reason the term "unbeliever" is used is because the thinking is that, what kind of a believer in the God of Abraham, or any other deity for that matter, would be so willing to kill people in their homes!

Regarding what side to fight in Syria: Remember that it is extremist vs. mainstream, tribe against tribe in those wartime acts of war. It has nothing to do with Islam.

About Sharia: Muslims live Sharia everyday when we pray, fast, earn honestly, offer charity, eat Halal, take care of our families and Masjids, as well as serve our communities. However, the term “Sharia” is fast becoming a term of hate at the hands of Islamophobes to attack Islam. This has dangerous, far-reaching consequences for American Muslims which have already begun.

The real life implications are many for Muslims. Banning Sharia will directly impact Muslim marriages, divorces, Islamic financing, and mediation. Banning Sharia is like banning Jewish Halakha practiced by many Jews in America. But very few people are articulating Muslim perspectives on Sharia.

Misunderstanding and misinformation about Sharia, as well as Islamophobia in general, is fueled not just by television. The internet has increased the power of hate and misunderstanding several thousand-fold. Google the word “Sharia” and you will find false, negative, and highly anti-Islamic material among the top search results.

Sharia in Islam is the Muslim's way of eating, praying, fasting, giving in charity, marriage, doing business, and more. Why would you be against the same issues that the Jews practice? Why would you be against Usury, for example?

    1. John Owens's Avatar John Owens

Again, apparently some people who CALL themselves Muslim do not seem to be aware of all the things that you are saying. They enjoy raping and beheading and bombing and coming up with creative ways to kill people who have done nothing to them. That is just sad fact.

Aside from all of that, Sharia law is anti-feminist, anti-homosexual, and anti-religious freedom. It is incompatible with US law.

      1. Dan Atatakai's Avatar Dan Atatakai

John Owens - You seem to imply that Muslims are murdering psychopaths. They aren't. They are even more dedicated to their faith of caring about one another than the same percentage of Christians.

Have you looked at Christianity? Talk about anti-feminist, anti-homosexual and anti-religious freedom. Would that not also be incompatible with US law?

By the way, WHICH laws would those be? Are you claiming that people should take their unruly children to the city elders and have them stoned to death? How about performing ANY work on the sabbath? Should they be stoned as well?

I still believe you have NEVER even actually read what Sharia is all about. Tell me, if you HAVE done so, about Usury and how that is any different than Jewish practices of Usury.

Remember, Jews, Christians and Muslims all worship the same God of Abraham.

Anti Muslim started to taper upward B4 the 1993 WTC bombing. On 9-11-01. A serious up tick in Muslim fears egged even more chatter. There are copious things that fueled the anti-Muslim movement. To blame that on the current POTUS in the "here & now" ? Naaaa, Not to any noticeable extent as compared to the past 25 + years. Unfortunately the trend has continued due to a few bad apples on both sides of the fence. The cycle must be stopped or the POTUS in the year 2020 will get the blame.
