It’s safe to say that President Trump did not like the first church service of his second administration.
On Tuesday, President Trump and Vice President Vance attended the official inaugural prayer service at Washington National Cathedral, a tradition dating back to 1933. Although services typically address the upcoming administration’s goals, it was decided before the election that this year’s service would instead focus on national unity, appealing to the president to help heal a divided nation.
During the service, Episcopal bishop Right Rev. Mariann Budde concluded her service with a bold move: she made a direct religious appeal to the president, imploring Trump to show mercy for vulnerable communities, including migrants and LGBTQ+ people.
Video of the sermon is going viral and has been viewed millions of times in just a few days.
So what exactly did she say, and why is President Trump now demanding she apologize?
A Controversial Sermon
Directly citing undocumented immigrants and the LGBTQ+ community, Rev. Budde calmly asked the president to “have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now,” pleading with Trump to show them dignity and respect in the coming four years.
“There are gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican and independent families. Some who fear for their lives,” the bishop explained from the pulpit, directly asking the president to show.
Pivoting to immigration, the bishop stated, "the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals. They pay taxes and are good neighbors… may I ask you to have mercy, Mr. President, on those in our communities whose children fear that their parents will be taken away."
She concluded with a nod to the Bible's teachings, saying: “Our God teaches us that we are to be merciful to the stranger, for we were all once strangers.”
Anger Builds In Response
President Trump’s review of the sermon? Not good.
“I didn’t think it was a good service, no,” Trump told reporters after the service was over. “They could do much better.”
However, the president's rhetoric later intensified as the story gained steam. “She and her church owe the public an apology!” Trump wrote in a late-night post on Truth Social. “The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hard line Trump hater. She brought her church into the World of politics in a very ungracious way. She was nasty in tone, and not compelling or smart.”
Clearly, the sermon touched a nerve. Some critics lashed out at the bishop, including First Baptist Church Robert Jeffress who wrote on X that the Rev. Budde “insulted rather than encouraged our great president” and that “there was palpable disgust in the audience with her words.”
But some responses were much darker. Representative Mike Collins of Georgia went so far as to call for her to be deported.
Rev. Budde even faced reported death threats online from critics furious that she spoke to the president that way. She went on the Rachel Maddow show to discuss the backlash:
What Does It Mean to Be Christian?
While this incident has obviously flared some tempers, it's also prompting a wider debate about Christian teachings and how they affect policy decisions.

So, how does the bishop feel about the message she sent?
In an interview the following day on The View, Rev. Budde said she felt it was her duty to speak on the issues of mercy and dignity as they are taught in the Bible, and she hopes Trump will take the message to heart.
“I wanted to emphasize respecting the honor and dignity of every human being,” she stated. “I was trying to counter the narrative that is so divisive and polarizing and in which real people are being harmed.”

Why would people, for generations, choose to be apart of a group that is actively discriminated against unless they were unable to change their attractions? The Apostle Paul would have been familiar with this practice as a Roman citizen who traveled ancient Greece, Turkey, Syria, and Rome. Also, the old Bibles that were published prior to 1946 interpreted the Ancient Greek that the Bible was originally written in to mean "adults that harm children". A Martin Luther Bible from the 1500s has "knabenschander" which refers again to "adults who harm children". The Germans didn't change that word until the 1980s. The same is true for Swedish and Norwegian translations - old Bibles had the local equivalent with the same meanings as the German.

Both, male and female, are born with the instinct to produce offspring (children). Gay people do not reproduce, without artificial insemination, it's impossible. They can adopt, but adopting is not re-producing. Why do you think so many gay couples, both male and female, want to adopt a child? Because of genetics, the instinct to reproduce, but the cant, so they adopt. All living things, horse's, dog's, cat's, turtles, fish, flowers, trees,, all living things have the instinct to reproduce, to continue the existence of the species. To reproduce takes a male and a female. That's everything I need to know to know.

I'm intersex, I was born with both a male and a female reproductive system, netiher worked properly. My genetics say female and yet my physique and voice are masculine. It's how I was born, its natural, its nothing anybody decided.
If you think that this is a choice, then biology classes must not have been on the school curriculum, I apologise for that ommisison. To say that its a fact that you are male or female bioligically is incorrect. I am a woman and yet you would look at me and say that I am, or should be male. If I'm frank, I'd say that I'm a darn ugly woman who is too masculine but I am a woman. Yes, life would be easier if I tried to live as a male but that's to make others happy, it's not who I am. Some would insist I live as a male as I look masculine but then that's forcing somone to be Transgender so that they can feel comfortable. What would you have done with those of us who are genetically different? Eradicate us? Murder is after all a sin.
I can't have children, my reproductive system was such a biological mess that it was impossible, I had a hysterectomy at the age of 21 which further removed any options. But, that doesn't make me any less female. Ones ability to reproduce is not, depsite what some think, the only indicator of womanhood, it's just one dynamic. A strong one, but not the only.
I'd urge you to actually sit down with an intersex person such as myself and listen to what we have to say. The University of Google isn't the source of facts, its the source of opinions, nothing more. And sure, if you speak to someone who agrees with your perspective, then positive affirmation of your perspective is the answer you will get.
The real answer lies elsewhere. It lies with those who have to actually live this genetic variation.
Of course you don't have to listen to the voice of others if you don't feel comfortable exploring your understanding, I won't force you or insist you do. Instead, I'll simply offer thagt the world is somewhat more dynamci that most of us realise and seeing it in all its glory only serves to expand upon the amazing journey we are all on.

Racheal, I listened to doctors many decades ago and they said we are all conceived female until the age of 12 weeks. Then a chemical is released that starts the process of turning the girl into a boy. Sometimes the chemical is never released, and they retain both parts and at other times it is released later in life which really causes a mess. One of the things that chemical does is cut the connection between the right and left hemispheres of our mind when turning to a male child. That is why women have intuition because they can access all the information at once from both sides of their brain and man cannot.

In fact, reproduction is a very slight incentive for humans to have sex and most humans will not have sex unless they have an attraction to someone. It is that way for LGBTQ persons. They just don't fall into YOUR (professed) beliefs of who they should be attracted to. Oh, yes....I did say PROFESSED beliefs. Your argument just seems a little too made up and defensive to lend much credence to your anger. Creative reasoning really hints at hidden motives.
Be that as it may...condemning a religious leader for asking someone who claims to follow their beliefs to ACTUALLY follow those beliefs is incredibly hypocritical. She did not condemn him...she did not admonish him...she did not place blame, cast aspersions, or demand he change his ways...she asked for him to show mercy. ANYONE who condemns someone for asking that mercy be shown to any of Gods children has no business calling themselves Christian.

You are 100% wrong and you don't have any evidence to prove you aren't, but even a casual Google search will find a LOT of evidence that neither situation is a choice. You are denying the findings of the entire medical profession and decades of biological research when you say things like that, and as you are not thousands of medical professionals, your opinion on these facts does not count for a hill of beans. So what did she say? Show mercy to a specific class of criminal. Within this class of criminals are normal non violent working criminals, non working non violent federal dependents, murderers, rapists, thieves, abductors, swindlers, drug dealers, foreign enemy agents, terrorists and any other unsavory flavor of lawlessness one could find in any general population in the planet.
This is contradictory to what we find in the Bible in many ways. When a preacher delivers messages in contrary to the Bible we can safely say he or she is a minister of Satan.

As to her sermon, she was saying what she believes, which is part of the vows she has taken. If somebody wants a different sermon, get a different clergy member. Meanwhile, she was obeying the tenets of her faith, which is what she should do. Her sermon was not egregious, it was simply something that some people don't like or don't agree with. All the arguments about "was it Christian or not" are meaningless. It aligns with her version of her religion. There are many sects of Christianity and they don't agree with each other.
Whether or not you like Trump (I don't!), it appears that he was fairly elected and even won the popular vote. About half of the voters support him and voted for him. Now, he is doing exactly what he said he would do. His supporters are thrilled. People like me are horrified. He is doing what the people who voted for him want him to do. I'm pretty sure that they will be hurt and worse off at the end of his term. We will see.
People generally need better critical thinking skills and the ability to look past slogans that last less than ten seconds. The issues that we face aren't simple. If we chant a slogan and leave it at that, we haven't said anything. Doing that loses all the nuance and important details. We need to stop letting people do our thinking for us. This is true no matter what side you are on.
I dread the next four years but I can see that Trump is doing what he said he would do and what his voters voted for. I honestly believe that his voters don't understand what they have voted for, but they used their vote as they see fit. I'm hoping that the next four years wakes people up without doing too much damage.
As for me, I'm a liberal. You can throw stones or judge me as you see fit. Your opinions of me are not me, however, they are simply your opinion. The same thing is true of Bishop Budde's sermon. Your opinions of her are not her. You are free to disagree and many people do. All I can say is Vet your clergy better next time. There are many who would have delivered the sermon that Trump wanted.

I personally don't like trump Michael. I agree with his critics that his mouth isn't very presidential. I wish there could have been a different choice for the age but there wasn't. I'm happy for the people in my factory that have hope where there was none.
We're at the point where half of the national will feel disenfranchised no matter which side takes leadership. As Brien alluded to, the left will continue to end Trump's presidency any way they can. To them, the ends justify the means.

First off, Biden and Trump deported approximately the same amount of illegal immigrants in their 4 years in office. Millions of criminals are not pouring into this country and our border is not open.
Secondly, most undocumented immigrants here illegally originally came legally but then overstayed their visas. Clamping down on the border does nothing to stop this from occurring. These "victims of illegals" are being used as pawns by White Nationalists to demonize non-white people as violent criminals and inhuman scum when the vast majority of them are not.
Lastly, every death, rape, or kidnapping by anyone is one too many. It's a tragedy that some people, immigrants and citizens, choose to commit crimes, especially those that cause physical harm to another person. You're using these tragedies for political points, not because you genuinely care for the victims, but because they are useful for your political agenda. Closing the border would not have saved the thousands of people you claim to have been harmed by illegal immigrants when the majority of them are entering legally.

If I were to pick a religion that I most closely connect with, I would have to consider myself a universalist by nature. I believe in the concept of a God but not the holy trinity or the teachings of the Bible.
With that said, Christianity, the dominant religion in the USA (and if Trump has his way, the only religion) is based heavily on the New Testament. Basically the guiding principle is more positive and forgiving than the Old Testament. Looking at the Bishop’s beautiful speech from this point of view, I believe that Bishop Budde did exactly what she has been taught to do. In the face of such aggressive and demeaning rhetoric coming from the Republican side, she simply offered a Christian view with the hopes that she could connect with Trump in some way.
Sadly, Trump neither believes in Christianity nor Mercy, and is a classic case of a megalomaniac. Because of that he took this, as with anything that doesn’t boost his ego, as a direct attack.
I know that not everybody feels this way, but the aura of Trump, to a stronger degree since he first walked into the political landscape, is one of anger, hate, and retaliation. I’ve watched our country change from the peaceful big brother into a power hungry bully. Bishop Budde is a voice of hope during a time of anger and chaos. We need more people to speak out as she did, not to Trump, but to the people of this country who have the power to change things.

Your bible is a manmade publication put out by a corrupt church at the time with it's own agendas which were to manipulate and control the populations. They picked and chose what to include then edited that further until they had a product that fit their agendas. Women were written out or down graded to suit the male dominated society at the time. At the time he lived he was not that well known as we perceive him to be today. He was known to the Romans but not considered that much of a threat since he had a small select following and preached love and forgiveness. They may have found him an annoyance but those advocating taking up arms or violence were more of a concern. I often wonder why so many people revere Paul; in my humble opinion, he was the equivalent of a modern-day Taliban and was, in point of fact, a "Pharisee of Pharisees" prior to his conversion. I have a minister friend who studies Paul. According to him, the true faith was brought ONLY to Jews by Jesus, and to Gentiles thru Paul. So, he reads Jesus's words through the filter of Paul which seems disingenuous.

I praise Bishop Budde. I've gone online to the National Cathedral services, and she is consistently correct in what she says. The phrase "Trump hater" doesn't apply, for hate is contrary to the Christian belief. Sermons often are a form of giving advice based on what is taught in the Bible, especially how to live peacefully. Her sermon was no departure from this idea, although it contains specifics as how not only should Trump live and witness, but to the rest of us. It needed to be said. The Episcopal statement made in baptism clearly states that we respect the dignity of every human being. Her sermon didn't stray from this point.

As a pastor, I have several concerns about a member of the clergy expressing her opinions and seemingly condemning our newly sworn-in President of the United States during a moment that should have been uplifting. It is disheartening that she chose to appear on shows like The View and the Rachel Maddow Show, aligning herself with very left-leaning media outlets to promote her own righteousness. Her sermon that day felt more like a performance, and honestly, after attending countless sermons over my 60 years of church service, I can say I have never encountered a sermon quite like this one.

Bishop Budde was referring to Christ's teachings in the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12), specifically Matthew 5:7 "blessed are the merciful, for they shall be shown mercy". If he doesn't like that passage, he's not a very good Christian. While now Pagan, I was raised Evangelical Pentecostal. My parents were both raised Catholic. I was taught by my mother to always follow every red letter in the New Testament (the words directly spoken by Christ). I still do my best to do so as they're important to being a good human being - kindness, mercy, generosity, love, rejection of hatred, rejection of valuing material things and wealth, being a peacemaker, and being a good influence by living by his values openly. I still believe in those values. They're actually extremely similar to Pagan values. Trump is prideful, greedy, wrathful, jealous, lustful (for many things), a glutton, and lazy - a full representation of the Cardinal Sins in one person. He is upset because the sermon hit a nerve and the shoes fit perfectly. He's everything my mother and the Bible raised me not to be. I couldn't, in good conscience, vote for someone who didn't match my values. Nor could my mother, who is otherwise politically fairly conservative. Bishop Budde doesn't owe him an apology, he owes her an apology as well as owing an apology to Christ.

She (Mariann Edgar) married her husband, Paul, in 1986, and took his last name of Budde. (1) They have two sons. As far as your other claim... Mrs. Edgar-Budde is a citizen and preacher in the United States and murder is still illegal here. She spoke of love and mercy and compassion - aren't those supposed to be qualities that Jesus would want us to have anyway? She wasn't advocating breaking the law, nor was she attacking the President or Vice-President. Asking for mercy and compassion on weaker, vulnerable people is not an attack. If non-Christians like myself can recognize it was a request, then those who claim to be Christian would recognize that as well.

You appear to have a very closed mind on transgenderism and you're clearly not well educated on the process of transitioning. These children go through years of therapy in many cases to make sure they are actually experiencing gender dysphoria and most who choose to seek surgery do not do so until their later teens. These are not confused 6 year olds receiving gender affirming care, they are children who know they are trans and want to live as their preferred gender so they can be happy just like someone who is cisgender. No one is brainwashing these kids to think they are trans; these kids simply are transgender from birth. These kids have already made up their minds about who they want to be. You're the person who is telling them they can't be that and that they aren't that and that they must be confused and brainwashed into the way they have always felt about themselves.

The sermon exposed at its root a belief of the most contemptible assumptions about Trump and his intentions. It also (inadvertently?) ran cover for the real dangers of Trump, as 'liberals'' protestations (and extreme violent 'reactions') have since his first election.
The call for mercy issued by the Bishop was respectable enough in a vacuum. ...in a vacuum, as in, not if timed and aimed to capitalize on and exacerbate the most ludicrous fears and hatreds directed at Trump, and not to lend cover for the kind of idiotic 'reactions' we saw in the 'protests' that burned cities in 2016.
The extremes of contempt aimed at her are also grossly overdone. I was annoyed at her glomming on to the fear factory message, but goodness! Another's idiocy does not justify idiocy in response. That just makes two idiots, and this is two negatives that do not combine to become a positive.
I don't think Trump's commentary on it was undue or overblown, but others have gone nuclear. We are a nation of conditioned reflexes, by and large; it's time to overcome that, and learn to suspend reaction long enough for our response, if indeed any is called for, to be meaningful and worthy of a sovereign soul.

While your plea for compassion is commendable, it is neither compassionate nor biblical to undermine the rule of law or to disregard the sovereignty of a nation tasked with protecting its citizens. The scriptures are clear; God is a God of order, not confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33). Governments are instituted by Him to promote justice and uphold the rule of law (Romans 13:1-7). To imply that securing borders and enforcing immigration laws is contrary to God’s mercy is a misrepresentation of biblical teaching. The same God who commands us to love the foreigner (Leviticus 19:34) also established boundaries for nations and called leaders to exercise wisdom and discernment in governance (Acts 17:26).
Your statement that “the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals” misses the point. The issue is not the inherent morality of individuals but the legality of their presence. To dismiss the importance of documentation is to suggest that laws governing immigration are trivial, thereby eroding the integrity of the very system that allows people to come to this country safely and legally. Justice cannot exist without law, and law cannot stand without enforcement.
Furthermore, while you highlight the contributions of undocumented immigrants, you fail to address the strain that unchecked illegal immigration places on public resources, infrastructure, and the American workforce, particularly among lower-income citizens. Is it not equally compassionate to consider the plight of working-class Americans whose jobs, wages, and safety are directly impacted by illegal immigration? True mercy requires balancing justice and compassion—not sacrificing one for the other.
You also appeal to the fears of children whose parents might face deportation. While this is indeed heartbreaking, we must remember that the parents themselves bear responsibility for placing their families in such precarious positions. Compassion does not absolve accountability. The call of the gospel is not to enable lawlessness but to minister grace within the framework of truth (John 1:14).
Finally, your call to welcome those fleeing persecution is one that conservatives do not reject, but it must be done responsibly. The United States already accepts more refugees and asylum seekers than most nations worldwide, a testament to its generosity. However, such hospitality must be balanced with national security and the well-being of current citizens, lest we compromise the very stability that makes this nation a refuge.

In these trying times, when truth seems obscured by the chaos of divisiveness, the role of the bishop—or the moral authority within any faith community—becomes ever more critical. It is an unfortunate reality that many have watched with disbelief as one who once occupied such a role of influence, and whose words carried weight, has now undermined both divine and moral law for the sake of power. Specifically, we look to former President Donald Trump, whose actions, rhetoric, and choices have left many questioning the sacred trust bestowed upon leaders.
In the light of scripture, we are reminded of the high calling of those who speak for justice and righteousness—those who should represent the divine light in their words and deeds. In this sense, Trump’s actions over the years have often demonstrated a disregard for the teachings of Jesus Christ and the divine call to love, compassion, and integrity. From his disregard for the poor to the encouragement of hate and division, these actions represent a stark contrast to the ideals presented in the sacred texts.
As written in the book of Matthew 7:15-20, “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits.” The fruits of one’s actions—compassion, empathy, justice, integrity—are the true measures of their character. Trump’s actions, often speaking with inflammatory rhetoric, pursuing policies that deepen inequality, and his many personal failings, have shown the world his true fruits.
The degradation of the role of the bishop is not a new phenomenon. History has witnessed many leaders who have twisted the power of religious influence for personal gain, misdirecting the moral compass of those who trusted in them. Trump’s self-affirmation, his penchant for power and control, and his exploitation of faith as a means of furthering his own agenda reflect the same patterns of degradation seen throughout history. His rhetoric has often sowed division rather than healing, built walls rather than bridges, and encouraged hostility instead of unity.
In light of this, what are we called to do as followers of a just and compassionate faith? We must reclaim our moral compass and hold our leaders accountable—not just in a political sense, but in a spiritual one. For as the Bible teaches in James 3:1, “Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.” The call of the bishop is sacred, one that must be treated with reverence and accountability, and it is incumbent upon all of us to demand that those who speak in the name of the divine do so with sincerity, compassion, and justice.
If we look to the teachings of Christ, we are reminded that “the first shall be last and the last shall be first” (Matthew 20:16). We are urged to care for the poor, the marginalized, and the oppressed, for it is in this service that we find the true heart of God. Trump’s policies and actions, especially those that left communities vulnerable and deepened societal inequalities, stand in direct contradiction to the love and service that Christ exemplified.
As we reflect on the degradation of the bishop—on the moral authority that was once held by figures of righteousness—let us remember the true calling of leadership in the divine sense. It is a calling to serve, to uplift, to be a beacon of light to those in darkness. The true words of God call us to love, to heal, and to unite, not to divide or deceive.
We, as a collective faith community, must stand firm in our belief in justice, compassion, and love. We must rise above the rhetoric that seeks to undermine the very principles of humanity and righteousness. Through faith, we reclaim our moral compass and reassert the sacred trust that has been placed in those who lead us. It is time for the degradation of the bishop to end, and for the true words of God—spoken through righteous, compassionate leadership—to rise again.
In this spirit, we must work together to heal, to uplift, and to advocate for a world that reflects the love and justice we are called to embody. The moral degradation we have witnessed in certain political figures can only be undone through a collective return to the true meaning of leadership—one rooted in truth, compassion, and justice.
