Pope Francis has passed away at age 88 this Easter Monday, leaving behind a profound legacy as the first Jesuit elected to be pope and as a beacon of openness in a Catholic Church otherwise known for its traditionally conservative leadership. In a statement, the Vatican said Francis died from a stroke.
Jorge Mario Bergoglio was born December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he committed himself to the priesthood as a young man and eventually rose to become a cardinal. Elected to the papacy in March 2013, Bergoglio became the first pope from the Americas, as well as the first pope from the Southern Hemisphere.
Francis was the first pope in half a millennium to ascend to the role while another pope still lived, following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. At times, the relationship between Francis and his predecessor seemed fraught with tension, with reports that the more traditional Benedict occasionally sought to undermine Francis. Some close to the Church feared that two different popes with wildly different views may even result in a schism – though that never materialized.
A New Direction For the Vatican
Francis also instituted reforms to address the sexual abuse scandals which have haunted the Church for years. Under Francis, the Vatican established protocols for reporting abuse and cracked down on Catholic leaders who sought to cover it up. Several high profile leaders were defrocked following these reforms, including Cardinal Theodore McCarrick in 2019.
Francis often called on his flock to be good environmental stewards and was a vocal advocate for addressing climate change, which he believed to be one of the most urgent issues facing the world today. In his ecology encyclical Laudato Si, he acknowledged climate change was largely “a result of human activity,” urging global reforms to heal the “irresponsible use and abuse” of the earth’s resources.
An Agent of Peace
From the onset of his papacy, Pope Francis was committed to taking the Church in a more progressive and open direction, emphasizing compassion for marginalized communities around the globe, including refugees, the global poor, and the LGBTQ+ community.
Francis continuously condemned global indifference to the plight of migrants, going so far as to call it a “grave sin” to turn them away. His first trip outside of the Vatican as pope was to an Italian island called Lampedusa, where he tossed a wreath into the Mediterranean Sea in honor of hundreds of North African asylum seekers who died there seeking a better life.
He frequently called for peace in global conflicts, from Ukraine, to Gaza, and beyond. In 2019, Francis traveled to South Sudan seeking an end to the war there and famously kissed the feet of Sudanese leaders as he pleaded with them to find peace.
In his last public remarks, during a prayer delivered on Easter Sunday, the pope reiterated his calls for peace in Gaza: “I appeal to the warring parties: call a ceasefire, release the hostages and come to the aid of a starving people that aspires to a future of peace.”
Complex Views on Gay Issues
Francis also sought to smooth friction between the Catholic Church and the gay community. In 2013, Francis famously remarked “Who am I to judge?” when asked about gay priests, indicating a radically inclusive shift in both tone and action on the Church’s complicated relationship with the LGBTQ+ community very early in his papacy.
However, his views on the issue were clearly complex, and those eager for a major shift in Catholic teachings on homosexuality never got their wish.
Although Francis advocated for basic legal protections such as same-sex civil unions, his traditional views on marriage did not appear to shift. In 2014, he reaffirmed the church's stance, saying that "marriage is between a man and a woman." In 2021, he reiterated that message, saying that the Church "cannot bless sin" when asked about blessing same-sex unions.
But he did speak about embracing and accepting gay people. “Homosexuals have a right to be part of the family,” the Pontiff said. “They’re children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out, or be made miserable because of it.”
And just two years later, Francis changed course slightly, saying that Vatican blessings could be offered to same-sex couples – they just couldn't be marriage blessings specifically.
This seesawing frustrated many LGBTQ+ rights advocates, who had hoped for more substantial policy changes from the Vatican under Francis' tenure.
No Stranger to Controversial Remarks
Clearly, the pontiff wasn't afraid to wade into controversial territory when speaking in public. Francis consistently made headlines with his frank and open guidance on those controversial topics.
During Donald Trump's first presidential campaign in 2016, the pope made global news when he said that Trump "wasn't a real Christian" – a remark that prompted backlash from the evangelical right and Trump's supporters.
He also raised eyebrows by calling clergy celibacy – a long-held tradition in the Catholic Church – "temporary."
Regardless of what one's opinions are about his actions, the depth of Francis' impact is undeniable. During his 12 years in the papacy, Pope Francis steered the Church in a more modern and socially-conscious direction, leaving an indelible mark on the world and the billion-plus Catholics that inhabit it.
Reactions to the News
Messages from world leaders poured in following news of Francis' passing.
Vice President JD Vance, who met with the Pope on Sunday, also offered his thoughts:
However, not everyone was eager to celebrate the pontiff. Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene appeared to call the pope "evil" and insinuate God was involved in his death:

He wasn't a true Disciple of our Savior Jesus Christ Jehovah. He did not even have the Holy Priesthood Authority of our Savior Jesus Christ Jehovah either. A fraud. This is not being disrespectful. Not participating in this Gaslighting.

Hes finally paying for the murders of his flock during argentinas pig war, his reason for enduring poverty living among stray dogs and cats. Glad hes gone.

I still consider myself Catholic. Pope Francis is the best Pope in my lifetime. I am 71 and a transman. His love for the world and all of it's inhabitants was evident. I l9ved him and believe he l9ved me, and through his love, believe God loves me just as I am.

These posts demonstrate the intrinsic hate that some have; a projection of their own soul. It's a dichotomy to the purpose of our ordination and truly makes me ashamed to call myself a ULC minister. Like this Pope or not, he was a man who made an attempt to steer the world in the direction of peace and understanding much more than sideline critics and haters.

RIP. Pope.
That said, that guy was way to political. I thought the Pope was suppose to be apolitical?
-
Where did you hear the Pope is supposed to be apolitical? You can't work for the poor, the homeless, the hungry, the victims of war without being involved in politics.
I'd prefer our current governmental regime was less concerned about religion.

No great lose, he was an evil man, He took the wrong path. Now he is gone at last. A new POPE will fix his sins.
-
God makes all final judgements in relationship to each indiividual. Therefore, it amazes me that human individuals take the position of God and declare if other individuals are evil, going to hell, or have taken the wrong path in life. "Judge not least ye be judge" (paraphrase).

Rest in peace Pope Francis

VP JD Vance killed him as Trump tries to reign supreme.
-
Don't know if you're kidding or not, but I had the same thought! - Vance drops in and the Pope's dead shortly thereafter. Vance probably used his deep set, darkly made-up voodoo eyes.

EJEW, oh, honey, there are so many more reasons to shame anti-vaxxers! This one's probably not the one that should have charged your illegitimate, righteous indignation.
-
Don't you all think that this post should be about the loss of a Pope. Granted it's as political as our own governments. I became Ordained hereto hopefully find like minded individuals who support and promote acceptance and tolerance of all human beings. Alas, yet again another disappointment. Except for a few of us. Bless the Pope and may he do all he can from the demention we cross over too.
-
Right about now it's pretty hot where he is no.
-
Hopefully he got saved before he died or he is in Hell now.
-
Jimmy, saved by who? Saved from what? (explain, please)
Does that eagle/flag/MAGA icon of yours have any relation to your thinking and discourtesy?

Not Catholic but I liked this Pope. I enjoyed his Christmas Eve messages and looked forward to them. How great that he hung on to give one last Easter blessing. May he Rest in Peace.

Pope Francis RIP. Your service is complete and your humble example as an equal with all humanity. St. Francis of Assisi would have been proud of the example you set during your years of service. Thank you from my heart and spiriit. Peggyann

-
I do miss beloved Pope Francis and will pray for him.
-
For a Catholic, he was not bad at all.
-
For a human, you mean?
-
Yes, Pope Francis counted himself equal to all humanity. He did not see himself as above others nor did he disrespect other spiritual belief systems.

The Vatican said today that Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88. Due to an illness that progressed to pneumonia in both lungs, the Pontiff spent his last weeks in the hospital. So, in other words, someone killed him. A pneumonia vaccine lasts 5-10 years, and people couldn't take the time to Vaccinate! TRAGIC!! Who killed him and who will be next, because it was one of you anti-vaxxers! John 14:12 Vaccinate!!
-
How rude that you took the time to shame anti-vaxers for his death. Quite disingenuous and unkind.
-
A little self righteous?
-
-
Mary, "A single pneumococcal vaccine shot typically provides lifelong protection for adults. While some individuals, especially those with certain health conditions, may need a booster dose after 5 years, a one-time vaccination is generally sufficient for most people over 65." Wiki.
Elizabeth, anti-vaxers didn't cause the Pope's death, but they did cause many others - from Covid to measles.
-
YouTube podcasting %$#@! Matt Mason says the Pope is in hell. You can check it out, but why bother giving this evil man clicks on his site. Our world has turned upside-down.
-
So how does Mason know the whereabouts of Pope Francis? Did he actually see Francis going through the Hell gate or something?? Mason is a judgmental twit.

Easy… American JD Vance killed him.
-
Oh my gosh Paula! I knew Vance killed Lincoln and President Kennedy but I didn't know the dirty dog got the Pope too! Let's hope the next president brings Vance to justice. He probably killed a bunch more we just don't know about.
Frigging Vance!

Mary, please.
According to the Mayo Clinic, "Pneumonia is an infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs. The air sacs may fill with fluid or pus (purulent material), causing cough with phlegm or pus, fever, chills, and difficulty breathing. A variety of organisms, including bacteria, viruses and fungi, can cause pneumonia."
The only form of Pneumonia that the vaccine prevents is "Pneumococcal." This is a bacterial infection, so whether the Pope died from a Stroke, as the Vatican press release said, or the Pneumonia was an underlying factor, makes no difference. This is far from an anti-vax conspiracy.
-
Mary,
The normal vaccine approval process takes 10-15 years. This century alone there have been over 10,000 medicine recalls that endured the 10-15 year process.
They did COVID in 11 months. Feel free to pump that junk into your bloodstream. All's all y'all can pump that junk into your bodies.
To us thinkers, we see it as pure fear driven foolishness. Best case scenario is I wait to see how all the guinea pigs come out in another 10 years. You must understand, some of us aren't beholden to a Biden, a Trump, anyone or anything. We just see how we see without blinders. Blinders are required to get an 11 month experimental vaccination. Logic will not allow for it.
Neither my wife daughter or myself were covid19 vaxxed and we never even got sick during the pandemic. I even traveled via airplane across the country during the height of it all, around thousands of people. My daughters school resumed in August like normal unlike most schools. They unmasked as soon as our dictator governor said they could(thank you your majesty)
For what it's worth, John 14:12 has absolutely nothing at all imaginable to do with vaccinations or politics. It's about believing Jesus is who he says he is. It's about Jesus.
-
The vaccines available in general work for individuals. Nevertheless, there are those who vaccinations may not work. Therefore. unless we know the specific details of each individuals medical issues, age issues, or resistence to these vaccinations. We can only make decisions personally for our own choices along with our doctors to make the right choice of treatment. We may believe the individual and docters make the wrong choice of medical treatment options and yet we must remember to respect his or her choices medically just as we desire others to respect our own choices.

I heard of Pope Francis for many years. And I am so sorry that he died. According to the Holy Bible, Christians that die faithfully will be resurrected on paradise earth or go to heaven after Armageddon or after the great war of God.
-
Amen Buon Viaggio Bergoglio
( Scrivo In Italiano Grazie )
-
I HOPE the POPE REACHED HIS FINAL and LAST HURDLE in HIS LIFE and HIS GOD is JOYFUL !
-
Amen Brother!

Good riddance to bad rubbish. He went to hell, just where the evil ******* belong. Regardless of how he died. The world is better off without him or it.
-
Sadly Mary, a good man, compassionate and Christian, passed from this life to his Eternal rest with our Lord. Your post inspires our prayers for you... and for whatever hurt and ignorance has hardened your heart.
-
You have a right to your opinion, however, since it appears that you are not God your comments are unfounded. It does appear you are hurt and angry on a spiritual level. May Peace be with you as you continue your life journey,
-
You give off wretched vibes.
-
Your a heartless individual and completely missed the message God sent through him. Your judgment will follow you to your end. Good luck explaining that to a higher power more knowledgeable than you will ever be.
-
Mary, Mary, Mary, could any more of a miserable triggered human being than you are. Bless you Mary ; no go freak out

I have no doubt that Pope Francis was a kind and gentle man but he was just that a MAN. The Catholic Church is first and foremost a business. It's main function is supporting the Vatican and the vast network of Catholic churches and various other properties. If you go any poor community the finest buildings and the most prosperous entities are the Catholic churches.
-
I will pray to the Goddess that your trauma is healed and your heart is softened. I wish you peace.

As a man I judged Pope Francis to be a good man. Speaking as a non-Catholic, I judged him as a breath of fresh air [and fresh ideas] to lead an important world-wide religion that ideologically remains stuck in the Middle Ages. I wish that he had assumed the Papal throne at a younger age with more energy to challenge the entrenched Catholic establishment. [By the way --- if you are judging Francis as a man do compare and contrast his character with the character of a current president and world leader.]
