A prominent Muslim civil rights group is condemning Elon Musk for labeling a collection of Muslim aid organizations as “terrorists” in a post on X, igniting a firestorm of criticism just as Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar, begins.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is now calling on Musk to issue an immediate apology, warning that his reckless allegations could inflame Islamophobia, endanger innocent Muslim lives, and undermine the very principles of justice and fairness.
Musk’s Comments
Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO and government advisor overseeing the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), took aim at more than a dozen Muslim humanitarian organizations that have received grant funding from USAID, the federal agency responsible for managing foreign aid.
Responding to a viral post on X that falsely claimed over $150 million in USAID grants had gone to “terrorist-linked organizations,” Musk amplified the accusation, posting:
“Why pay terrorist organizations and certain countries to hate us when they’re perfectly willing to do it for free?”
The controversial post prompted quick backlash.
CAIR Responds
CAIR wasted no time in pushing back against Musk’s inflammatory rhetoric. According to CAIR officials, Musk’s comments were completely "baseless", and they alleged that he was accusing the groups of being linked to terrorism simply because they have ‘Muslim’, ‘Islam’, or ‘Palestine’ in their name. And Nihad Awad, CAIR’s National Executive Director, directly called out the billionaire’s remarks:
“This kind of rhetoric fuels Islamophobia, endangers innocent lives, and undermines the values of justice and equality,” he wrote. “Do better.”
CAIR’s official account also blasted Musk’s statements as defamatory and offensive, making clear that his remarks not only smear legitimate aid organizations but also endanger American Muslims and their charitable work:
“Anyone who see [sic] the word ‘Islam’ in the name of an American charity and then immediately declares that the charity must be a ‘terrorist organization’ is a hateful person who must know next to nothing about American Muslims and their contributions to our society, including humanitarian work,” they wrote.
As the backlash mounts, Musk has yet to respond to accusations that he is inciting violence and defaming Muslim communities. However, given his oversight of DOGE, the targeted aid programs remain at risk of being slashed or eliminated entirely.

I'll start by saying Musk, much like so many others, would be better received should he think before speaking. Words are powerful. Words create actions, often not the intended action behind the words, but still happens based on the perception of the hearer. With that said: There may be organizations which receive funding that are associated with terrorist groups. It would be right to not send funds to these, especially funds needed for organizations who don't have such associations and truly use the monies to better those they serve. However, it's imperative that a thorough investigation is conducted, identifying them, prior to making a blatant and very public statement which would group every organization into the list of the undesirable. So, Identify, Investigate, Verify, then take appropriate measures to curtail and abolish those organizations that support terrorism. This is the missed useful application of the powerful position E. Musk now finds himself

Elon Musk is the terrorist here. He has no business being where he is doing what he's doing.
A majority of the American people elected Trump knowing full well in advance that Elon would be doing all this. That says to me that it's fully in keeping with the will of the electorate.
